Animal Cruelty (Furious Fiction)

FURIOUS FICTION

A hijacking plan? Check out this Furious Fiction from May 2019 – Enjoy!

ANIMAL CRUELTY

“Highjacking a plane? Isn’t that a little extreme?” Samantha asked, crossing her arms.
Andrew rolled his eyes, “We need to get the attention of the Mayor, and all those other government stooges.” He stepped away from the airport blueprints and picked up his lunch. The mayonnaise was dripping down his hand, but he ignored it as he checked their camera set up. This hadn’t been Sam’s idea. She had wanted a more subtle approach, but Andrew always went for the big ideas.

“Maybe we should just rob a bank,” She said. Andrew spun, scowling at her.
“What kind of message would that send? We’re not fighting the economic crisis, we’re standing against the animal cruelty of this state. That plane is carrying animals across the state border for testing.” Andrew turned and shoved the last of his sandwich in his mouth, bending to fix a light.
“But blowing up a plane would mean mayhem. Not to mention all those innocent animals on board.”
Andrew groaned, then looked back at her, his eyes softer this time, “Sam, this will send a message and save the future animals, which are destined to be tortured and killed anyway. It’s for the greater good.” He nodded and sat on the chair which was facing the camera. Samantha sighed and moved into her position as camera operator, pushing the record button.

Andrew sat straighter and cleated his throat, “To my dismay, the mayor has done nothing about the cruel treatment of animals in this state. Despite our protests and warnings, he has still not stepped in-”
A loud explosion shook the ground and Samantha ducked down, looking up for falling debris. Distant sirens started getting closer and Andrew ran to the window, his eyes growing wide. As Samantha peered out, she saw a large cloud of smoke above a blazing fire, in the building down the street.

“Is that the cosmetic lab?” She asked, her ears still blocked from the noise. Andrew scrunched his nose and frowned.
“Someone beat us, they took out the laboratory,” He said, his voice still muffled. He started pacing and Sam exhaled, relief setting in.
“It’s a Sunday, so nobody would have been in there,”She said, sitting on the couch in the corner, smiling.
Andrew rolled his eyes and clicked off the camera. “Yup. Guess we don’t need this anymore,” He spun and walked away, leaving his plans where they were, as the sounds of sirens grew closer.

The Last Bookstore (Furious Fiction)

FURIOUS FICTION

A Bookstore like you never imagined – October 2019 Furious Fiction – Enjoy!

THE LAST BOOKSTORE

I glanced around the empty store on Thursday night and sighed, dropping my chin onto my hands. The back shelf had been broken for over a month, but it wasn’t worth the trip to the hardware store. Moving to the counter, I opened my emails on the out-dated computer that I preferred and clicked on the email from Martin Summers again.

–IT WOULD BE IN EVERYONE’S BEST INTEREST FOR YOU TO SELL YOUR PROPERTY ‘IVY’S BOOKSTORE’ TO ‘SUMMERS HOLDINGS’. FAILURE TO DO SO WOULD BE UNFORTUNATE FOR BOTH PARTIES.

Unfortunate? I scoffed. He’d been after my store for almost twelve months now, but I was the final holdout. I smiled at the thought of being the final bookstore owner keeping her doors open, like Meg Ryan in You’ve Got Mail.
I dropped my shoulders and a deep frown creased my already wrinkling forehead. This was the last bookstore left, and I wasn’t giving it up without a fight.

The bells on top of the front door jingled and I plastered a smile on my face for my first customer of the week. A young man in a black suit flew through the door, talking loudly through the tech implant in his ear.
“I told Dallas last week that his proposal was never going to be accepted. This is the new way of the world; if you don’t have the implant, you don’t get the high power jobs. He knows how we operate.”
The man looked over at me and tapped his ear twice, turning off his phone. He flashed an insincere smile and readjusted a backpack on his shoulder.
“Do you have something called ‘Sherlock Holmes’?”
I cleared my throat, trying not to laugh and cry at the same time, “It’s in the back corner with the mystery novels.”
He nodded and turned, “They don’t print on paper anymore, are you really the last bookstore?” He asked as he disappeared from view.
“I sure am. There’s just something about leafing through a real book and hearing the pages smack together. You can’t get that from the digital ones.” When he didn’t answer, I started making my way towards the mystery section.

Empty.
Had I imagined a customer? Was I that desperate? I moved back to the counter and waited a few minutes before I spotted him outside my front window, walking away. I took a deep breath, and a distinctive smell wafted from the back room.
Smoke.

I moved quickly, trying to push open the door. When it wouldn’t budge I yelled for help to an empty street. I stepped back as the fire crackled, spreading through the walls. Grabbing my bag from behind the counter, I pulled it close to my chest. I inhaled sharply as I looked at the books one more time. Martin Summers was going to get what he wanted after all.
I watched quietly outside as the flames swallowed up my legacy and I said goodbye to the last bookstore on earth.

Sirens (Furious Fiction)

FURIOUS FICTION

Accidents, Firemen and Life or Death – June 2019 Furious Fiction – Enjoy!

SIRENS

Sirens grew louder as fire fighters arrived on the accident scene.
I watched through foggy eyes, as the bright red fire engine pulled up next to my car.
The pain was rippling through my legs, chest and head, as I tried to shift underneath the mangled car parts that were shoved up against my body.
My lips were dry and cracked as I attempted to yell out for help. No noise escaped and I tried a soft word, then a whisper; anything.
The smoke was starting to thicken and I squinted, trying to find a face in the smog.
A man with a short, black beard, about thirty, poked his head through the cloud and looked up and down the state of my body.
“Hi, my name is Steven, what’s yours?”

I tried to utter words, but breathing was difficult enough. “Samantha,” I finally managed to whisper.
Steven nodded and looked back at the mangled mess in front of me, turning to yell something behind him as horns honked with traffic now at a screeching halt. I tried to look behind me at the van, which had slammed into my car, and the car in front of me.
“Hey now, stay steady,” Steven said, guiding my head gently back into place. I glanced down at my legs, now hidden by the crushing metal. Steven put a neck brace on me and smiled, “You’re looking a little red in the jowls, Samantha.”
I frowned and he chuckled.
“I have word of the day toilet paper,” he said, pointing to my face. “Your cheeks are looking red.”

I took in a sharp breath as the buzzing of tools shook my car. Steven disappeared and I felt my breathing getting shallow, as my eyes frantically scanned the seat next to me. My son’s Iron Man lunchbox sat on the floor where he had left it this morning.
Steven returned and smiled, “We’ve almost separated the two cars Samantha, just hold on.” He looked across me, the quickly checked the back seat as he saw the lunchbox.
“He’s at school. My son forgot his lunch,” I said quietly. Steven frowned then nodded, disappearing into the haze once again. I felt myself fading, until a sharp grip on my arm pulled me back into reality. Steven was yelling at me, but I couldn’t hear him anymore.

The world was slowly slipping away when light flooded the car. The contorted metal was being pulled away from my legs, and I took in a deep breath of air, as the pressure on my chest was released. The pain was unbearable and I yelled out, as other fire fighters surrounded my now exposed driver’s seat. They slid me onto a thin board and I held my breath as they lifted me into the air, and onto a stretcher.
The world was starting to fade again as I saw Steven’s face, as he spoke in a distant voice next to me.
“You’re going to be ok Samantha.”

Lady Eloise (Furious Fiction)

FURIOUS FICTION

Murder, Inspectors, and Birthdays – June 2019 Furious Fiction – Enjoy!

LADY ELOISE

I held my breath, as the blood stained her white blouse.
The air was thick with tension.
We were all suspects, and no guest could leave the house until the Inspector had investigated. He held a magnifying glass to the woman’s forehead then raised his hand into the air.
“Aha!” He exclaimed loudly, causing us all to jump.
“The killer is in this very room,” the Inspector said, spinning and knocking over a lamp. He reached down to catch it, just before it hit the floor. I giggled and he scowled at me. I tried to appear invisible as he readjusted his floppy hat.
“I object to this accusation in my own home!” Lady Eloise said, crossing her arms and huffing. The Inspector pulled out a smoking pipe.
“I don’t care, there’s been a murder and we have to catch the killer.”

The victim opened her left eye and cleared her throat, “Adam honey, is this going to take long? I have to pull the pies out of the oven.”
The inspector frowned, his voice instantly turning into a whine, “Mother, you’re ruining my murder mystery party. Please lie there and be quiet.”
The victim rolled her eyes, then closed them and sighed.
Inspector Adam stood taller, “As I was saying, I have discovered who the murderer is. It all came down to something small, something simple.” Adam reached into his pocket and pulled his hand up high.
“A button!” He yelled, startling everyone again. I exhaled and shook my head, “Whose button?” I asked.
Adam frowned and narrowed his eyes, “I’m getting there Susan, relax.”

I crossed my arms and leaned against the wall. We had been through all the clues twice, and this was Adam’s third guess as to who the murderer was. Everyone else had already worked out that the killer was Lady Eloise, but Adam seemed oblivious to the clues.
Clearing his throat, he extended his hand, the button in his hand.
“This button, could only have come from one person, and it was lodged in the victims’ hair.” He turned and pointed at Lord Pemberton, “You, Lord Pemberton, are the killer.”
The whole room groaned and Lady Eloise stood up, “It was me Inspector. I’m the killer. Can we eat dinner now?”
Adam frowned, then smiled, “You fell for my trap! I knew it was you all the time Eloise, now you have confessed in front of all these witnesses. Take her away Chief,” Adam threw the button onto the ground and everyone mumbled as we made our way towards the dining room.

“Susan,” Adam said quietly. I turned and raised an eyebrow.
“What?”
“Do you think people knew that I hadn’t worked it out yet?” He asked, his head dropping as his eyes locked onto the floor.
I smiled and shook my head, “No, they knew you’d worked it out.”
Adam looked up and smiled, “Good.”
I giggled and followed him into the dining room, where his birthday cake awaited.

Santa Detection Agency (Furious Fiction)

FURIOUS FICTION

With Christmas just around the corner, I wanted to dig this little story from my December 2018 furious fiction.
In a world where Santa is no longer welcome, see what he does – Enjoy!

SANTA DETECTION AGENCY

Trash littered the streets below as Nicholas glanced out the window. He had to be careful. The Santa Detection Agency was out in full force tonight.
It was Christmas Eve after all.
Nicholas readjusted the now empty present bag on his shoulder and quietly made his way to the door. He had made his last delivery, but he still had to make it out without getting caught.

He smiled. Another year of delivering presents to children for Christmas day complete, despite the wanted posters. Nicholas frowned; he hated those posters. They just couldn’t get his nose right.
After the last war, Santa Clause had been branded a criminal and Nicholas had to rely on only a few to help him.
He checked his watch. The display read 11:55pm 24 December 2068. Five minutes to make it to his sleigh two blocks down.

Nicholas looked up and down the street and nodded to his lookout on the nearby porch. The old man motioned that all was clear.
His long white beard and protruding belly made Nicholas nostalgic. No longer could he don the red suit and white beard, having to camouflage himself.
Nicholas moved out of the doorway and into the street.
“Santa,” the man whispered with a wistful smile as he passed him.
Nicholas smiled back and moved swiftly, reaching into his pocket to retrieve his encrypted phone. As he hit Speed Dial 1, Nicholas pushed himself close against the nearby building.

Sirens. He’d heard Sirens.
The call clicked through and Nicholas lowered his voice.
“Bernard?” He hissed into the phone.
“Santa?” The Head Elf spoke a hushed tone and Nicholas stood still for a moment. When the Sirens grew louder he took off in a sprint, the phone close to his ear.
“We have a Code Blue!” Nicholas yelled into the phone.
“SDA?” Bernard asked, his voice louder. Nicholas puffed as he picked up his speed, the sirens catching up.
“That’s what Code Blue means Bernard.” Nicholas yelled, turning a corner.

His sleigh was still a block away and Nicholas couldn’t outrun a car.
“Locking onto your GPS coordinates now Santa,” Bernard’s voice sounded distant as Nicholas lowered the phone.
“Santa Clause.” The speaker on the police car was filled with static as the officer barked through it still a fair way back, “This is the SDA, please surrender.”
Nicholas ignored their orders and kept running. Sounds of bullets flying behind him propelled him further.

A whirring above him stirred up the dirt and Nicholas halted. Looking up, he watched his sleigh land quickly. The police were setting up a barricade as Nicholas boarded his sleigh. Bernard nodded to him and slid over to the passenger seat.
Nicholas frowned as he fumbled with the gears. With all the new technology, he still managed to have the only ‘manual sleigh’ in the world. As he shifted into the right gear, he smiled at his faithful sleigh. The police below watched helpless as it was gone in a flash.

The Wedding (Furious Fiction)

FURIOUS FICTION

Please enjoy my Furious Fiction entry for February 2019 below – a wedding with a twist!

THE WEDDING

The music started.
As I walked, I counted every step carefully. The last thing I needed was to trip in this goofy white dress. The Converse shoes were keeping my feet warm, but on a 30 degree day it was the last thing I wanted.
Instead I locked my gaze on him. I was so lucky. He looked incredible in his monkey suit. The music started to fade as I watched him, a smile plastered on my face.
I glanced around at the people staring at me. Halfway. All I had to do was make it little further without falling.

He frowned and I felt my chest constricting. Was he disappointed? The minister and bridal party all shared in his expression and I stopped walking.
Sounds came back into focus as my fiancé rushed towards me, yelling. That’s when I heard it.
The gunshot.

Things blurred out of focus as I felt the impact propel me forward. I fell hard onto my stomach and my breath caught. Another shot behind me echoed and I rolled over, trying to breathe again. As I stared at the ceiling screams filled the church as people scrambled to get out unscathed.

Then I saw him hovering over me, a dark smile on his face.
“You were going to get married without me?” He tutted and aimed the gun in my direction. “I thought we meant more to each other.”
I sucked in a breath and waited.
“Hey!” My fiancé’s voice broke through the silence and I whipped my head around. “Step away.” His service revolver was aimed at my ex’s face.
“Back off, or I’ll kill her,” The intruder said. I took in a deep breath, the pain radiating through my shoulder. To my left, the aisle decorations sat just within reach. As the men faced off, I reached out and grabbed a large white candle.

Our intruder turned to see it too late, and fell backwards as it made contact with his face. He cursed and I felt a rush of wind pass by me as my fiancé reached him. I inched up to see him kick the gun away and shout at someone behind me.
As police officers moved swiftly to my ex boyfriend, my fiancé turned and dropped to my side.

He put a hand on my face and smiled softly, “You’re going to be ok.” He said, moving over for the paramedics. As I winced through the pain, I looked over and saw him smile.
“What?” I asked through laboured breaths. He shrugged, a twinkle in his eyes.
“I just always thought it would be my second wedding that would be the dramatic one.”
I laughed and shut my eyes, shaking my head softly, “Second marriage?” I asked as he chuckled.

I opened my eyes and smiled at my future husband.
He leaned in closer and lowered his voice, smiling, “Lucky for me, I get to marry you twice.”

Face in The Crowd (Furious Fiction)

FURIOUS FICTION

This month – Take Place in Supermarket, Have a two word first sentence, have Something breaking – Enjoy!

FACE IN THE CROWD

I froze.
My covert camera was falling and the subject of my investigation was staring at me. I gave him a brief smile then turned, picking up a packet of bread rolls and placing them into my decoy shopping basket. The subject gave a small nod of recognition then returned to selecting his waffles.

I quickly adjusted the camera which was disguised as a pen in my pocket, then casually moved further down the aisle.
As the subject continued browsing, I watched carefully for signs that his back injury was exaggerated. When he bent down to the lowest shelf with ease, I smiled.
Gotcha.

That was the most exciting part of this job. When I signed up for being an investigator, I was sure it would be solving crimes with the police and catching out cheating spouses. Unfortunately, the most exciting part of surveillance work was catching someone exaggerating on an insurance claim.

When the subject moved into another aisle, I calmly followed at a discreet distance.
As I turned the corner, I felt my heart beating faster.
It was her.

I looked left and right, then tried to plan my escape. Where could I go? I needed to get footage of the subject, but if She saw me, my cover would be blown.
Slowly I backed up and hid half of my body at the edge of the aisle. I pulled the covert camera from its place in my pocket and angled it better.
Why was she here? How did she know my subject?

I poked my head in and out and watched as they talked. My heart beat faster and faster as I watched her touch his arm and play with her hair.
I was about to go back to my car and wait for the subject there, when I saw it.
She moved in closer and he didn’t stop her. Their lips collided and I felt my jaw drop without permission. I stared, unable to look away.

The sound of someone clearing their throat behind me, made me almost drop my shopping basket and I turned. A tall man with a staff shirt on was standing with his arms crossed and his foot tapping. I tried to smile then looked back at them, still kissing.
“That was my…” my voice trailed off and the guy gave me a sympathetic smile. He motioned towards the exit and I nodded.
“Thank you for choosing…” His voice faded away as I walked back to my car.
I would never tell her. She would never know that my heart was broken.
After all, I was just another anonymous face in the crowd.

Airport Security (Furious Fiction)

FURIOUS FICTION

Take place in an airport. Have fun reading this – Very short one so Enjoy!

AIRPORT SECURITY

The clock ticking was deafening and he raised his hand, checking his watch.
It had been too long.
The airport outside the security office was buzzing but he couldn’t focus.
Eric took a deep breath and tapped his foot. The jiggle of the doorknob made him jump and he turned. Karen was slumped over as she looked up, her eyes sorrowful.

“It was empty,” Karen said, falling into a chair.
“What?” Eric felt his heart beat faster and he stood,
“I just bought those donuts.”
Karen shrugged and spun in her chair to watch the monitors. Eric growled and sat back down, the spring in his chair hitting his back.
Karen tapped Eric’s shoulder and he looked over to the monitors.
“Hey, check it out,” She said, zooming in on a couple at Gate 5. “She’s going to cry,” Karen grinned and raised her eyebrows.
“Nah,” Eric said, swatting his hand.

“Ten bucks?” Karen zoomed in further and tilted her head.

“Deal.” Eric said, watching as the couple embraced.

The woman reached up and wiped her eyes and Eric cursed under his breath, handing over ten dollars.
