The Bourne Identity Book vs Movie: Two Different Versions of Identity and Memory

Estimated Reading Time 3min

Jason Bourne is a spy with amnesia. I wrote about a spy once and can’t remember where I put my keys half the time, so clearly we’re practically the same person. After revisiting The Bourne Identity movie and finally picking up the novel it was based on, I discovered something surprising: For once, the movie won. Easily.

As always, spoilers ahead.

The Movie Version of Bourne Is Much More Likeable

This seems to be becoming a recurring theme in these Book vs Movie reviews. Hollywood tends to make characters more likeable. Books, on the other hand, often seem determined to make them frustrating. I genuinely enjoy Matt Damon’s portrayal of Jason Bourne. He’s capable, sympathetic, and easy to root for.

Book Bourne? Not so much. I found him abrasive, irritating, and surprisingly difficult to care about. For someone suffering from amnesia, I felt remarkably little sympathy for him.

The Story Is Almost Completely Different

There were so many changes between the book and movie that it felt like the filmmakers picked a few ideas from the novel and then built an entirely different story around them. Yes, Bourne is found in a boat. But after that, many of the events, relationships, and plot developments head in completely different directions.

It felt less like an adaptation and more like someone took a handful of concepts from the book and decided to tell a new story. Personally, I prefer adaptations that stay closer to the source material and only make small changes when necessary. When you’ve read the book and recognise the original story, it can be frustrating to see everything turned upside down.

The Book Handles Bourne’s Injuries Better

One area where the book definitely stood out was the severity of Bourne’s injuries. Movies often have a habit of giving characters life-threatening wounds and then letting them continue fighting ten minutes later as though nothing happened.

The book doesn’t do that. It makes it very clear how badly injured Bourne is, particularly in the opening chapters. The physical consequences of those injuries are given far more attention, which made the danger feel much more real. I appreciated that aspect of the novel.

Bourne Never Stops Complaining

My biggest issue with the book wasn’t the plot. It was Bourne himself. He spends a huge amount of time frustrated that he can’t remember who he is. Now, that sounds reasonable at first. The problem is that it never stops.

Every few pages I felt like I was being reminded that Bourne was annoyed, angry, or frustrated with his memory loss. Not because people were hunting him. Not because his life was in danger. Just because he couldn’t remember things. After a while it became exhausting. Instead of feeling sympathy, I found myself becoming irritated.

I Didn’t Finish the Book

This doesn’t happen very often. I usually push through and finish books, even if I’m not enjoying them. The Bourne Identity became the exception. I stopped reading. I wasn’t enjoying the experience, I wasn’t interested in continuing, and I didn’t feel like spending more of my reading time forcing myself through a story I actively disliked. Life is too short, and there are too many books waiting on my shelves.

Book vs Movie: Which Was Better?

For me, the movie wins without question. I enjoyed Matt Damon’s version of Bourne. I liked the streamlined story. I appreciated the action and pacing. The book had a few interesting ideas, particularly when it came to the realism of Bourne’s injuries, but that wasn’t enough to overcome how much I disliked the main character. In fact, I disliked him so much that I never finished the novel. That’s probably the clearest verdict I’ve given in a Book vs Movie review so far.

Have you read The Bourne Identity, seen the movie, or both? Did you prefer the book or the film?

5 Things I’d Love To Learn

Quiero aprender cosas nuevas.

Okay, did you understand that? If not, don’t worry because neither do I!

Okay, so I know what that translates into because I typed it into Google translate, but it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. Learn Spanish!

Ricky Ricardo GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

There are a few things on my list that I’ve always wanted to learn – and I’ve decided to share.

  1. Speak another language
Spanish is among the top few that I’d love to learn (French and Russian are on there too). There’s just something about the language that I find drawing. It could be because my favourite TV show when I was growing up (and yes, still) was I Love Lucy. Ricky Ricardo was always confusing me when he was angry by throwing out Spanish in every episode 😀
  2. Ride a motorcycle
Okay, this one might need some help – because in all honesty I’m half excited, and half TERRIFIED! There’s just something about zipping in and out of traffic that makes me concerned that a car driver would open their door and I’d go flying across the road.
  3. Solve a Rubik’s Cube
People always seem super smart when they get these done in a few minutes – heck even in an hour, or a day. I have NEVER been able to grasp this one, but would love to pull it out at parties.
  4. Write in shorthand
A fun, easy way to get notes down really quickly. It was used a LOT back in the day, but not really anymore.. I’ve never used it anyway. I take so many notes, so often, it would really make things easier.
  5. Learn to Code
I’m usually pretty good with computers, but coding is something that is a whole other language – literally. A brand new language, ones and zeroes, ways to read and write that I don’t know already… Plus, with the continuing rise of technology, it would certainly maintain job security.

Okay, so I didn’t include some stuff like juggling, writing with my left hand, or moonwalking, but it’s a pretty good list, right? I thought so anyway.

What have you always wanted to learn? Share in the comments – love to hear about it.

The Murder App | FIVE

A serial killer, technology, and a detective determined to find the truth. Come along on a murder mystery adventure, with The Murder App – Chapter 5!

Ella let the sounds of the store around her fade as she stood, watching the attendant go through her account.

She had been there a few months ago.

She thought she remembered the man she sold it to.

It was an unusual purchase, and he had a charming quality about him.

Ella needed this to be the guy. This case was already weighing heavily on her – physically and emotionally.

The ties that their killer was using had definitely come from the stock numbers in this store. They had confirmed it. Ella had a strong feeling of disgust that such a purchase could have gone through unchecked. That nobody thought it odd to have a man buying a bulk order of 50 red ties. But she understood the sales clerk’s position. She had believed his story about being a private designer wanting additional stock.

It wasn’t her fault. Not really. Still, the pain behind the consequences ate at Ella’s heart like a flesh eating virus.

“I can sit down with a sketch artist if you want,” the sales clerk’s voice brought Ella back into the present. She was lightly dusting her hand against Steve’s, while he quickly scribbled her comments. The swift strokes of his pen – mimicking the vein that now pounded in the side of his neck – made the words unintelligible.

Ella rolled her eyes as he casually glanced up, leaning his elbow on the counter and returning her gaze. “Well, thanks for your time. We’ll be sure to send someone by.”

Trying not to gag, Ella cleared her throat instead at his emphasis on the word ‘someone’.

It was typical of Steven to flirt with a cute witness. Ella had always considered it more than a little unprofessional, but Steven had a way about him. It negated the traditional creepy of a guy that hit on everyone, and replaced it with an impish charm.

They hadn’t got anything particularly helpful about the man who had made the purchase. They’d still get the sketch done, then compare it to suspects they got during the investigation. For today though, it was unhelpful. They had to start again. To go back to the dating app, and hope their honey trap caught a fly.

Ella needed something now. She had to get this guy.

Peeling herself away from the flirting fest, she opened her phone and pulled up the Love Connection app.

Over the last two days, she’d received several winks and messages from potential suspects. But one by one, Cyber had dug into their personal information and weeded them out. No red flags.

Another message bobbed up and down with a notification, waiting for her. Ella pulled it up and scanned the man’s profile.

He was cute, in an off beat kind of way. He had short blonde hair, and wore narrow glasses without subtle black frames. They suited his face well, and gave him a disarming appearance.

Opening his message, Ella caught her breath as she read over the words.

“I hope you don’t consider me presumptuous, but you are beautiful. Would you consider meeting at the Bright Sun shopping centre in South Melbourne on Monday?”

She was currently standing in the Myer department store of the Bright Sun centre. She quickly looked up and subtly scanned the crowd around her. Surely he wasn’t here – watching her already. Keeping tabs on the women he reached out to.

Right? It had to be a coincidence.

She looked back at the message and noted that it had come through in the past half hour. She moved quickly back to Steve and the shop attendant, politely pulling him away.

“Hey, watcha do that for? We were vibing, you know.”

She ignored the comment and thrust the phone at him instead. “I just got this message on Love Connection.”

Steve was struggling to keep up with her brisk pace as she headed back to the parking lot where they’d parked their unmarked car. They had to get back to the office and dig into this guy more thoroughly. Even if it was just a gut feeling, Ella wanted to go through this guys life with a fine tooth comb.

“Okay,” Steven said, handing back the phone. “But this could be just a coincidence.”

Ella gave a half-hearted nod. “It could. But I don’t believe in coincidences. Especially not on a murder case.”

I hope you enjoyed chapter 5 of The Murder App.
Come back next month for the next part of the story!

Moving During Covid… Crazy or Brave?

Pack up the moving boxes, and take me away from my comfortable home with family into a first time apartment! Yup, you heard me right – I’m moving out… During Covid-19 lockdown

Am I crazy? Starting a new season in the middle of a lockdown? I don’t think so. I’ve been considering moving into my own place for about a year, and I found the perfect one. It’s been a whirlwind of a choice. Yes, Covid is here and we’re still in Victorian archaic lockdowns, BUT things are looking up and I’m going for it! I’m moving during Covid!

I wasn’t planning this, but I happened to have a squiz online at what was around, and found the perfect place. It ticked ALL (and I mean all) the boxes, and the video walk through looked great. With it being only 5 minutes away, I decided to give it a drive by and got such a good feeling in the area, and about the place in general. So, with nothing to loose (and my job on temporary hiatus), I applied for the property, not expecting much.

I especially didn’t expect what happened next – I got it! They called up only a few days later, and offered me the apartment. I got a little walk through, and I’m heading out like a chick from the nest in just a little bit!

It’s certainly a big change, but it’s exciting… and scary… and ridiculous… It’s safe to say that I’m riding the rollercoaster of emotions right now.

I know I’m not alone in this situation, stepping out and being brave despite the world’s situation.
Are you doing something brave during 2020? Let me know in the comments and we’ll share out crazy, brave decisions together!

Real Life Explosions

Bang! Explosion, fire everywhere and you’re knocked on your ass!

Okay, okay. I hear you asking, why are we talking about an explosion?

In my spy adventures The Hannah Carmichael Chronicles, I had an explosion (Instalment 68 – link below if you want to check it out). I wrote that scene with NO idea what a real explosion would actually be like. HOWEVER, since then I decided to check it out.

I was fascinated to see what famous movie explosions were real or ridiculous, when Hollywood goes for the big explosions.
Because this guy can explain it WAY better than I can, I’ve put the video here so you can check it out.

If you want to see how my Hannah Carmichael explosion experience holds up to the ones above – Check It Out HERE

What explosions have been YOUR favourite in movies, tv shows or even books? Share in the comments 😀
