Escape Room | Short Story

The large door seemed to tower over Ellie as she sucked in a deep breath.
She wasn’t one for adventure, especially where an escape wasn’t possible, but here she was. How did she let her friends talk her into this ridiculous thing.
“Are you ready?” Brian asked, nudging her in the ribs.
She shook her head, “I don’t know about this Brian.”
“Oh come on Ellie, it’ll be fun!” He said, shoving Ian into Samantha as they smiled and laughed. Everyone else was excited about this Escape Room business, but there was something about being trapped in a room with the only escape coming at the end of puzzles that was unsettling for Ellie.

The host of the game opened the door, wishing them good luck and locking it behind them. The first room seemed to fly by, although Ellie wasn’t too much help as her friends thought quickly, moved through the clues to solve the riddles and opened the door into the next room.
As she followed along, Ellie noted every item inside each space, trying to make her brain move as fast as theirs. By the third room, their team had only 15 minutes left to clear it, and the final room. She squeezed past Ian and moved towards a chair in the corner.

The theme of this particular escape room was Pioneer Apocalypse, and Ellie was sick of seeing mannequins with racoon hats and bonnets around the rooms. Their eyes followed her, and she never wanted to see another log cabin as long as she lived. The large arm chair in the corner was her best option as her friends eagerly followed the clues around the room. She rolled her eyes and leaned on her elbow, looking in the closet to her right. The ‘bedroom’ was similar to all the others, and peeking through the closet clothes, was another mannequin.

She sighed, staring at another expressionless face. Frowning, she narrowed her eyes and looked closer. This one’s eyes were closed and it was slumped over, instead of sitting up straight and looking rigid. Maybe it was an actor paid to jump out and scare them into the next room?
Ellie carefully stood and took a step closer, reaching out and poking it, then quickly retracting her hand.
“What have you found?” Samantha asked from across the room.
Ellie shrugged, “I don’t know. This doesn’t look like the other mannequins around.”

The group dropped their clue quest and huddled together behind Ellie, staring at the strange figure. Ellie reached forward and pushed her hand into the man’s shoulder. It pushed back and the body fell onto the ground in front of her, exposing a large blood stain on the mans back. Ellie’s gag reflex activated and she pulled backwards, pushing herself up against the furthest wall.
“I don’t think that’s part of the escape,” Brian said quietly, looking between his friends. They picked up the radio, still able to use two of their three clues.
“Would you like a clue?” The voice on the other end asked. Ian pulled the radio away from Brian, “Is there supposed to be a dead guy in the bedroom?”
Silence on the other end of the radio echoed loudly in the room, until a voice finally came through the static, “Please wait a moment. Someone will be coming to assist you.”

INSTINCT | Hannah Carmichael Chronicles (SEVENTY)

Your Briefing:

Hannah Carmichael is a Super Spy, who was trying to take down CGT – the evil spy agency, which she used to be a part of. Her husband Zeke, was secretly working to take them down, and roped Hannah (and her fellow agent and best friend, Stephanie) into the fight.
Hannah’s mother Evelyn was a CGT and Global enemy, but now, she seems to have been on the same side all along. Her Father James, was believed to be dead, and missing for over a decade, but revealed himself from the fight in the shadows to help take them down once and for all.
With Hannah’s memories sketchy after a CGT Kidnapping, she went with Zeke to a Peace Talks conference, where the Cataclysm domino’s were to start falling – but things went unexpectedly. Shots were fired into the crowd, at the leaders on the podium, and Zeke confirmed the shooter was his Boss – supposedly a ‘good guy’. What will this mean for the team, and for Cataclysm – is it still on? What will CGT do to strike back?

SEVENTY

Hannah Carmichael grabbed onto the railing of the roof and jerked upwards with the force.
She remembered everything as she stared up at the man who had once been her mentor and Father figure. Anthony smiled, pointing her own weapon down at her, “You just don’t seem to die Hannah Carmichael. Maybe this time this will finally do the trick.”
Hannah glanced frantically for a possible escape.
“No!” Stephanie’s voice rang out above her, and a shot echoed, sending a chill through Hannah’s body.
She looked up at Anthony’s face, now twisted in confusion, then pain.
A large circle of blood starting to grow larger in the middle of his chest and he dropped the gun.
Hannah pushed her body up against the brick building as her former boss fell to the ground with a thud.

Stephanie’s face appeared over the edge of the building and Hannah smiled, “Took your time Steph!”
Her best friend smiled wide and reached down, helping Hannah up and over the ledge.
“You remembered didn’t you?” Stephanie asked as they sat, breathing heavily and smiling at each other.
“I did,” Hannah said.
The door to the roof opened again and both agents reached for their guns. Zeke Anderson came through the door and Hannah smiled wide, jumping up and slamming into him, her arms wrapping around his neck.
“Zeke,” she said softly as he returned her embrace.
“You remember don’t you?” He asked, as they pulled apart. She nodded and kissed him until Stephanie cleared her throat behind them.
“Hate to break up this love fest, but we have a problem. Mainly the dead guy down there.”
Zeke frowned and Hannah shrugged, “Steph shot him.”
“Hey, he was about to kill you!”
“Never mind all that. James has the papers from Anthony’s briefcase. He’s moving the SUV to a more discreet location. We have to go,” Zeke pulled Hannah’s arm and started moving towards the door.
She pulled it away and shook her head, “But we didn’t get Anthony. We have no way to find out how high CGT goes, how deep the hooks are.”
“What about the ‘going to the media’ plan?” Stephanie asked.
Hannah shook her head, “That isn’t a good idea. We can’t predict the response. We need to take down CGT from the shadows. Piece by piece, brick by brick.”

Before another word could be spoken, the loud whirring of helicopter blades picked the wind up. Out of instinct, they ducked down and checked the skies.
A black helicopter landed in the middle of the roof, and they cautiously watched as it touched down, waiting with weapons at the ready.
The door slid open, and Hannah caught her breath as a familiar face held her own weapon, aimed at the three former government agents.
“Get in,” she said. Hannah shook her head but holstered her gun.
It was Cara Stone.

WHAT NOW | Hannah Carmichael Chronicles (SIXTY-EIGHT)

Your Briefing:

Hannah Carmichael is a Super Spy, who was trying to take down CGT – the evil spy agency, which she used to be a part of. Her husband Zeke, was secretly working to take them down, and roped Hannah (and her fellow agent and best friend, Stephanie) into the fight.
Hannah’s mother Evelyn was a CGT and Global enemy, but now, she seems to have been on the same side all along. Her Father James, was believed to be dead, and missing for over a decade, but revealed himself from the fight in the shadows to help take them down once and for all.
With Hannah’s memories sketchy after a CGT Kidnapping, it was decided that a mission may jog her memories. Desperate to remember, and to stop the World War III event – Cataclysm – will Hannah regain her memory, and stop a CGT weapons shipment?

SIXTY-EIGHT

The roar of an aeroplane overhead flooded Hannah’s ears as she tried to decipher Zeke’s shouts above the noise.
“What?” She asked, finally abandoning the idea that she could determine the words. He waited for the plane to pass over then pointed to the far right of the small airport, “That’s your position in the far right. The weapons shipment will land in Strip 7!”
Hannah nodded and the three agents split up, each taking a different vantage point. She wasn’t sure if this was going to bring back her memories, but Stephanie’s was coming back with every experience, so why not hers?

As she ducked behind an abandoned information counter, Hannah set herself up as if she worked there and sighed.
“You know I think this is a ridiculous idea right?” Zeke asked through their communication earwigs.
“Maybe, maybe not. The brain is an interesting maze,” Hannah said quietly as two pilots passed her on the tarmac.
“I guess, but putting yourself in danger when you don’t actually remember who it is your chasing, seems ridiculous.”
Hannah tried not to chuckle. “Okay, I’ll give you that one, but I have to try and jolt my memory back somehow. Then we can go public with this CGT agency, and blow the lid off their plans. Memories or not, I want to stop a world war.”
“Guys, incoming!” Stephanie shouted into the earwig as a large plane descended on Strip 7. Being the closest to the plane, her voice was barely audible above the sounds of the jet turbines. Hannah took in a breath, and checked for the gun that she had tucked into her waist.
“When they come out we’ll attack, and use the surprise to take out as many as possible. We can’t let these weapons reach CGT.”
As the plane got closer, even Zeke’s voice was beginning to fade under the noise. Hannah quickly made her way closer to the plane, which was now on the ground.
She reached cover and closed her eyes, taking in a deep breath, until shouts echoed from the direction of the plane.
Zeke started the count, “One, two, three!”

She turned and let shots fly from her gun as the three agents struck down the CGT weapons suppliers. When no others emerged, they slowly made their way closer to the plane. Flames licked out from all open spaces and Stephanie waved her arms, “Get back!”
The force of the blast slammed Hannah into the side of a truck and her ears rang with the aftershock. When she finally looked up, Zeke was yelling, his voice slowly becoming audible.
“Let’s go!” He shouted, helping her to her feet. They moved swiftly back to their car and Zeke skidded away from the explosion.
What now?

GUNS TO ACQUIRE | Hannah Carmichael Chronicles (SIXTY-SEVEN)

Your Briefing:

Hannah Carmichael is a Super Spy, who was trying to take down CGT – the evil spy agency, which she used to be a part of. Her husband Zeke, was secretly working to take them down, and roped Hannah (and her fellow agent and best friend, Stephanie) into the fight.

Shots were fired into the crowd, at the leaders on the podium, and Zeke confirmed the shooter was his Boss – supposedly a ‘good guy’. What will this mean for the team, and for Cataclysm – is it still on? What will CGT do to strike back?

SIXTY-SEVEN

“Hey James,” Hannah said as she bumped into James Carmichael in the hallway.
“You know it’s weird when you call me James. It’s always been Dad,” He said with a smile.
Hannah shook her head, “Yeah. I’m starting to think my memories will never fully return.”
He put a hand on her shoulder, then steered her towards the main bullpen, “come on, we’re having a strategy meeting.”

As they walked into the large space, Hannah tried to keep track of the arguments, which were swirling around her. Cataclysm, the World War attempt, could still happen, but it seemed like everyone had a different idea on how to stop it.
“We should just go to the media and show them everything we have,” Stephanie said.
“Are you crazy? CGT would kill you, and any reporter you talked to before the story even aired,” Sarah – the weapons expert – said, as she stood and her chair fell to the ground behind her.
“We can’t just do nothing,” Zeke said as voices rose higher. Hannah sighed as she watched the room, everyone except James yelling out ideas. He was observing, just as she was.

Hannah finally stood, reaching into her waistband and pulling out a gun. As she let a shot slam into the roof, the agents inside drew their own weapons, aiming them in her direction until she put her hands up in surrender. “Fighting won’t solve anything. It seems like the more these people are in the shadows, the more power they have,” Hannah took in a deep breath, “So, I’m going to the media to give them everything we have.”
The room erupted with shouting once again, and Hannah looked over at her Father. After a minute, he nodded and stood himself. The room grew quiet without the use of a shot and Hannah tried not to smile.
“Hannah’s right, we need to get the word out there. We need to show the world what CGT is capable of. We’ve all been in the shadows too long.”
“But we can’t let Hannah do it, she can’t even remember working for CGT in the first place,” Zeke said, his voice shaking.
“I’ve been looking into this memory loss situation,” Hannah said quickly, before more yelling could begin. “Exposure to similar surroundings or activities can help jolt it back.”
“Maybe Zeke should give you a kiss, I’m sure that would jolt some things back,” Sarah said from the other side of the room. Giggles made the rounds and Hannah rolled her eyes, “I was thinking more about a tactical mission.”

She turned to Roy and took a few steps closer to his computer, “didn’t we talk about a gun shipment that CGT was expecting?”
“Yeah, but it’s small potatoes. Nothing that would make a real dent in their operations,” Roy said, shrugging and pulling up their snitch’s intel.
“That’s perfect. Just enough to get my feet wet,”
Zeke shook his head, “Hannah, you can’t remember-“
“Can’t remember what? Who people are? I’ve got all my muscle memory, all my shooting and tactical training. I don’t see why I can’t do this and see if it jogs something back,” Hannah folded her arms across her chest and Zeke smiled, shaking his head.
“What?” She asked, lowering her arms and taking a step backwards.
“It looks like you’ve made up your mind. You did the arms crossed thing.”

Hannah frowned and Zeke turned to James, “Stephanie has regained a lot of her memories as well. I could go with both of them and see if it can shake loose the memories for both of them. But I still don’t know about the Media situation.”
James took a minute, then nodded his head, turning to Evelyn Carmichael, “We’ll do the mission. Do you want to go too? Shake loose your memories?”
The woman, who was apparently Hannah’s mother smiled and shook her head, “Something tells me I don’t want to remember everything, and I’d much prefer to listen.”
James nodded and clapped his hands together, “alright then. Let’s get you all ready, you’ve got some guns to acquire.”
