Winter, Thirteenth, Midnight & More… “Theme” book picks

Sometimes you want your monthly reading goals to be a bit more fun. That’s why I did the recent “Storygraph Picks My TBR” – to give the reading some fun.

I’ve decided to do it again, only this time we are going with “basic” themes like Seasons, Times, Days of the week, Names and Numbers. So, these are the results that I will be reading this month.

They try to work their way back into God’s good graces (spoiler alert, that’s not how it works) by killing the worst of the world. A woman decides she doesn’t want to live her life anymore, then finds a library between death and life where she gets to try and redo some of her biggest regrets.

Well, those are the books that I selected for the “basic theme” reading of (hopefully) this month. I am looking forward to finding out how they go!

Book Themes: Why, and What’s Mine?

Have you ever noticed that books tend to have themes? 

Everything we watch, read and consider has a theme. I’m not necessarily talking ‘Mother Goose’ but when you boil it down, you can usually see some common themes.

Themes like Love Conquers All, Courage, Justice (that’s a biggie), X and countless others. They’re all there if you ‘read between the lines’ because that’s the point, right? It’s the point of reading a story, of getting lost in another world with people making choices and leading somewhere. Whether that’s the back garden where someone is buried after a jealous murder, or finding that final pot of honey and eating a snack. It all leads somewhere, and has a common theme or moral to it.

The two main themes for my book KIDNAPPED ENTANGLEMENT are COURAGE, and FAITH.

Courage – To do what’s right, no matter the cost. To risk everything for the people you love, and the ones who need your help. To speak out for those who can’t. To love and be loved. To leap into danger to protect the innocent.

Faith – To trust that things will work for good, even if you can’t see it then and there. To trust that someone is walking with you, even if that someone is God. To trust that someone out there cares about you, and will do what they can to show it. To trust that your love and actions won’t go unnoticed.

A Real Murder Mystery

Recently I posted up a Furious Fiction Short Story called ‘Lady Eloise’
It contained something Interesting – a murder, and a party, and a birthday (link to the story will be at the end of this post, so keep reading)…

When I was in Year 7 at school, I went to a Murder Mystery party for a friends birthday. We dressed up, went to her house, and guessed all night which of us had done the dastardly deed!

When it was all done and dusted, I think it was safe to say that I was hooked. I loved mysteries, and solving the crime! This could have been the beginning of my crime and mysteries love affair, but who could say for sure?

I especially liked playing a character for the night (One, I might add, which was VERY different to my own personality – slutty dress included) and trying to figure out the clues.
I’ve done a few murder mystery dinner parties myself in recent years; some with success, others fell apart – but hey, it’s the thought that counted right?!

Have you ever done a Murder Mystery party, or thought about doing one? These days they have themes, written clues and audio – it’s all very much of a spectacle!
What would YOUR idea of a perfect MM Party theme be? I liked the 20s gangster version, or would you prefer a safari gone wrong?
