The Plans (Furious Fiction)

FURIOUS FICTION

Monthly short story fix? I’ve got you covered. This one was three sentences which had to be used anywhere:

The door was locked.
It felt familiar.
She laughed
Enjoy!

THE PLANS

It felt familiar. The lock pick tools in her hands.

She heard the tumbler click into place and smiled. Slowly she pushed the door open and tiptoed inside. She shut the door and used the moonlight to make her way into the study.

The plans should be in the desk that sat in the corner. She closed the door to the study behind her and opened the bottom drawer, pulling out its contents. A scratching noise to her left gave her pause and she looked to the window. The wind pushed a branch back and forth against the glass and she let out a breath.

She placed the contents onto the desk and felt around inside the empty drawer. She located the notch and clicked it. The false bottom popped out. Smiling, she pulled at it and squinted to see inside. A small white piece of paper sat in the middle of the drawer and she picked it up.
Pulling it closer to her face, she angled it towards the light and read.
She laughed. Two words were printed from an old typewriter in the middle of the paper.
‘Nice Try’.
She needed those plans.

Reaching into her pocket she pulled out her phone and clicked the home button. The light momentarily blinded her and she fumbled to turn down the brightness. As she pulled up the encrypted email with her instructions, she heard the front door open. Voices filled the house and she quickly put her phone into her pocket, looking around the room.

She smiled when she saw the bookcase on the wall to her right. It couldn’t be that easy, could it? Her heart was beating faster as she moved to the bookcase and pulled books out at random. Light entered the study through the edges of the door, the voices sounding dangerously close. Finally she pulled on a book titled ‘The Secret Room’. The bookcase jutted forward and she rolled her eyes. A little on the nose in her opinion.
Reaching behind the gap she pulled the heavy door open and slipped inside a small room. As she closed the door behind her, lights flickered on and she turned. Her mouth dropped open as she saw monitors with video footage from the house streaming live.

She watched as Andrew and Cynthia entered the study, flicking on the light. When Andrew saw the drawer open and the contents on top of the desk he shouted to Cynthia. They rushed out of the study and into the living room. Cynthia picked up a landline and Andrew began checking room after room.
She had to get out. To her left was a safe partially open and a wooden door.
She reached for the door then paused.

The plans.

Cautiously she opened the safe and smiled as she spotted the plans on the top of a document pile. She picked them up and reached for the doorknob again, cursing under her breath.

The door was locked.

Hannah Carmichael Chronicles | SIX

In The Last Instalment:

A flashback to three years ago revealed Zeke to be Hannah Carmichael’s husband. But on the day of their wedding, Evelyn came to warn Hannah that Zeke is not who she thinks he is. In the present day, while following Evelyn, Hannah spots Zeke inside a Coffee Shop with a mysterious man. Just as they are about to enter, a car drives past and opens fire on the shop. When the shooting stops, Hannah rushes inside to find the man who was with Zeke dead, and Zeke missing. What happened to Zeke? Who was the man with him? How will they find Zeke now?

SIX

“Search the entire area!” Stephanie yelled as she moved out of the coffee shop. Hannah closed her eyes and took three deep breaths. Opening her eyes, she reached forward and felt for a pulse on the man who had been inches from her husband.
Nothing.
Hannah sighed and looked over to where Stephanie was barking orders at other agents. The staff and customers who had been in the shop were huddled in the corner with Ian Longford keeping a close eye on them.
Ian glanced over to her and smiled, throwing up a wave. His gun dropped out of its holster and he fumbled to pick it up. Hannah shook her head and looked back to the dead man in front of her, taking a deep breath.
Reaching forward, she searched his pockets for identification. She hated some parts of her job.
She felt a wallet in his outside jacket pocket and smiled, pulling it out carefully. Ignoring protocol, she opened it to the section where the ID sat. The man’s picture was on a license listing his name as Stewart Smith.
Hannah sifted through the rest of the wallet. She pulled out two credit cards, twenty dollars in cash and a business card. Putting the credit cards and the cash back into the wallet, she handed it off to an agent next to her.
The business card was white with only a phone number in gold print displayed. Stephanie kneeled down next to Hannah, holding the wallet which was now sealed in an evidence bag.
“Stewart Smith? Please.” Stephanie scoffed and stared at the business card in Hannah’s hand.
“I’ve been over every single number linked to Evelyn and I don’t recognise this one.” Hannah said, handing the card over to Stephanie.
Stephanie frowned and looked back up at her, sighing.
“I do.” Stephanie reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone, dialling. Hannah stood and pulled a chair over, brushing off the glass and sitting down. Stephanie smiled,
“Hey girl! It’s Steph. How are you doing?” She paused and glanced at Hannah, opening and closing her hand and rolling her eyes.
“Yeah I’ve been good. Look I need a favour.”
Ian walked over to where Hannah was sitting and put a hand on her shoulder.
“We’ll find him Haz.” He turned over another chair and sat next to her as Stephanie rolled her eyes and moved towards the wall.
Hannah hated that nickname. It just reminded her that she and Ian used to date when they were training together.
“I’m going to find my husband no matter what.” Hannah said. If Ian was insistent on reminding her that they dated, she would be equally insistent to remind him that she was married. Ian frowned slightly then quickly covered with a warm smile.
Stephanie walked back over to them, shoving the phone back in her pocket and handing Hannah the business card.
“Call the number in one hour.” Stephanie paused and stared at Ian, raising her eyebrows. He cleared his throat and stood, patting Hannah on the arm. Stephanie took his seat and shook her head.
“What a schmuck.”
Hannah smiled and ran her hand over the number on the card.
“Whose number is this Stephanie?” Hannah asked, trying to make eye contact with her friend.
“You’re not going to like the answer.”

Hannah Carmichael Chronicles | FIVE

In the Last Instalment:

Evelyn and her associates had disappeared in a room without doors or windows. Hannah and Stephanie found a tunnel leading out to the street where Evelyn was nowhere to be seen. As they started the search, Hannah raced over to the coffee shop across the street where she thought she saw Zeke.

Where did Evelyn go? Was the person Hannah saw really Zeke? Who is Zeke?

FIVE

THREE YEARS AGO:

“Are you sure you want to go through with this?” Stephanie asked, putting her hand on her hip. Her satin gown wrinkled ever so slightly as she frowned and tapped her foot. Hannah laughed at her friend through the mirror and pulled at her veil to straighten it.
“I love Zeke and I want to marry him.” She said, turning to face Stephanie. Hannah put her hand on Stephanie’s shoulder and smiled. Her friend returned the smile and they turned back to the mirror.
The doors to the bridal suite opened and Evelyn Carmichael walked in. Stephanie reached into the dresser drawer and pulled out her gun. She aimed it at Evelyn and Hannah put a hand on Stephanie’s shoulder, taking a step closer to her mother.
“Hello Dear.” Evelyn said, slowly raising her hands.
“What are you doing here?” Hannah asked as Evelyn lowered her hands and shrugged.
“It’s my daughter’s wedding day. I came to give congratulations.”
Stephanie scoffed and peered out the window to the grounds below them where the guests were gathering. Hannah took a deep breath and squared her shoulders.
“You need to leave.” She said, taking a step closer to where her spare gun sat underneath the pile of clothes she had arrived in.
“You have several agencies after you Evelyn.” Stephanie said, her gun still aimed at Hannah’s mother. Evelyn chuckled and gave her a cold stare.
“I came to warn you.” Evelyn spat out, taking a step closer to Hannah. Stephanie cocked her gun and Evelyn shook her head, exhaling. She looked over to Hannah who had taken another step closer to her own gun.
“Zeke is not who you think he is darling.” Evelyn glanced at Stephanie and nodded out the window. “Those people down there don’t care about you. I’m the only one-“
“You?” Hannah choked out, trying to keep tears from smearing her makeup. “You’re the liar. The traitor.” Hannah took another step back and felt the chair hitting her leg. Evelyn sighed and shrugged.
“Fine Dear, have it your way.” She spun and walked back towards the door, pausing as she pulled at the handle. She turned her head back to look at Hannah and smiled. “When you do find out who Zeke really is-“
“I know who he is.” Hannah interrupted, pulling out her gun and aiming it at her mother. Evelyn scoffed and turned,
“Toodaloo.” Her mother’s voice echoed in the hallway as the sound of her heels disappeared. Hannah lowered her gun and Stephanie moved to the door, stepping out into the hallway and disappearing.
Hannah tossed the gun back onto the chair and moved over to her phone on the dresser, calling in Evelyn’s location.

PRESENT DAY

The sounds of traffic behind her faded away as Hannah stared through the window at her husband. Zeke was sitting and looking out the opposite window, a large man in a suit sitting next to him.
Stephanie put a hand on Hannah’s shoulder and she turned to face her friend. Stephanie put her finger to her lips and motioned with her head to the entry. Four civilians were seated inside the café and Zeke and his babysitter were in the back corner.
Hannah checked for her weapon and smoothed her shirt over it. Before they could move, tyres screeched around the corner. They looked behind them and the barrel of a gun appeared through the rear seat of a green sedan.
“Gun!” Stephanie yelled, dropping to the ground and pulling Hannah with her.
“No!” Hannah yelled as the gun fired into the coffee shop. Glass shattered around them and screams echoed in the street. When the firing stopped, the car revved and Hannah lifted her head. Stephanie pushed herself up, drew her weapon and ran towards the vehicle.
Hannah stood, glass falling to the ground from her back. She breathed heavily and watched as Stephanie disappeared down the street, yelling into her comms. Groaning to her left pulled Hannah’s focus and she stopped breathing.
Zeke.
Hannah stepped over the door frame and cautiously walked through the coffee shop. The woman who had been closest to the window lay face down on the floor, blood pooling underneath her. Hannah closed her eyes briefly then looked over to the other end of the shop.
A staff member peeked his head over the counter then down again. Stephanie entered the shop and Hannah nodded towards the counter.
“Anyone there? We’re here to help!” Stephanie said, slowly making her way over to the counter. Hannah turned and walked to where Zeke had been sitting. She pushed a chair out of the way and dropped to her knees.
The man who had been sitting with Zeke was lying on the floor, wounds becoming more prominent in several places. She pushed through the rubble until she felt a hand on her shoulder.
“Hannah.” Stephanie said softly, squatting next to Hannah on the floor. Hannah took a shaky breath,
“he’s not here.”

Hannah Carmichael Chronicles | FOUR

In the Last Instalment:

Hannah was trapped with her mother when a red spot appeared on her forehead. As Hannah ducked for cover, agents who appear to be with her dropped in from the roof and chased Evelyn and the two men away. Hannah and her friend, Stephanie, ran after them and cornered them in the warehouse office. When they entered the room however, Evelyn and company had disappeared.

How did they escape? Can Hannah find them?

 FOUR

“Where are they?” Stephanie asked, agents trailing into the room behind her. Hannah shook her head and tucked her weapon into her waistband. The room had no windows and no doors, but Evelyn and the two men had disappeared.
Several desks sat on each side of the room with a bookcase along the middle wall. Hannah put a hand on her left hip and tried to think like her mother. The warehouse building had been registered in Evelyn’s Shell company for over five years but there was no evidence she had ever been there before.
Hannah tapped her foot. Where had they gone in a room with no windows or doors? Stephanie gave Hannah a slight shove and grinned.
“You don’t suppose it’s a rotating bookcase?” she asked, sparking snickers from the other agents. Hannah rolled her eyes then paused.
“Everyone out.” She said, walking towards the door and opening it wider. The agents trooped out and Stephanie stayed put. Hannah stared at her and narrowed her eyes.
“What? You didn’t mean me did you?” Stephanie asked, putting her gun into a hip holster. Hannah exhaled and shook her head, closing the door. She moved towards the bookcase and bent towards the floor.
“Oh you can’t be serious.” Stephanie said, squatting down next to Hannah.
“I was kidding about the bookcase.” She said, tapping Hannah on the shoulder. Hannah paused and looked up.
“I’m not looking for a revolving bookcase.” She said, turning and moving to the edge of the desk next to the bookcase.
“When I was a girl, I hid in my mother’s office on a dare.” She bent and reached out underneath the desk.
“I wanted to hide under the desk, but when I got there, I found a lever underneath it.” Hannah smiled as her fingers wrapped around the familiar lever. She pulled it and the desk shifted slightly. Stephanie stepped back and whistled.
“A secret passageway?” she asked with a half laugh.
“Evelyn always has been a little dramatic.” Hannah said as she stood and waved for Stephanie to help her. They pulled at the false desk and it lifted, revealing a panel in the floor. Hannah pulled out her weapon and Stephanie pulled at a rope handle. As the panel opened, Hannah peered into the darkness and saw the outline of stairs leading further into the ground. She reached over to take a flashlight Stephanie held out and clicked it on.
Stephanie reached up and clicked her comms on,
“We have a tunnel in the office. Requesting assistance.” Hannah balanced her gun and flashlight and moved down the stairs.
As she reached the bottom a musty smell entered her lungs and she coughed. The floors and walls were crudely dug and the dirt stuck out in obscure patterns.
Stephanie bumped into Hannah as she tripped down the last step. Hannah turned around and frowned as Stephanie smiled and shrugged. Sweeping the room with the flashlight, Hannah located the passageway.
Every step crunched under her shoes and she tried to make herself lighter. The sounds of several agents behind them made Hannah pause. She turned and flashed her light on the five people behind her, putting her hand up to signal a stop. Stephanie turned around and whispered orders to the agents to be silent and Hannah turned back to the passageway.
They moved quietly until a glimmer of light grew brighter. She turned off her flashlight and used the light of the exit. As she grew closer, she noticed the walls were now concrete until she was met with the end of the passageway. She looked up to where a hole with bars was letting in the light. A grate?
She pulled out her flashlight, locating stairs attached to the wall and leading up to the tunnel opening. Hannah turned and handed Stephanie her flashlight, tucking her gun back into her waistband. She started to climb the stairs and cars revving and honking grew louder as she got closer to the exit.
At the top, she looked down to where Stephanie had started to climb. Reaching up, Hannah pushed on the grate until it gave way and she moved it to the side. Peeking her head up, Hannah squinted in the light to see a sidewalk in the city.
She pulled herself up and looked at the buildings and shops for a sign of Evelyn.
Nothing.
Stephanie and the other agents followed and split up in teams of two. Hannah reached out her hand.
“Do you have a phone?” She asked. Stephanie reached into her pocket and pulled out a smartphone, handing it to her. Hannah dialled a number and waited.
She glanced over to the coffee shop across the street and squinted to see clearer.
Dropping the phone, Hannah took off in a sprint to the window and pushed her hand up against the glass.
“Zeke?”

Hannah Carmichael Chronicles | THREE

In the Last Instalment:

Hannah has been taken captive by her Mother, Evelyn, while on the hunt to find the mysterious Zeke. With Evelyn’s goons at her side, she agrees to tell Hannah where Zeke is, IF she tells her where ‘It’ is. Hannah is trapped until she sees a red spot appear on Evelyn’s forehead.

Will Hannah Escape?

THREE

Evelyn laughed until she saw Hannah’s unwavering smile. She clicked her fingers at the men behind Hannah and they looked over to the red spot on Evelyn. Yelling, they dove at Evelyn, tackling her to the ground.

Hannah ducked to the floor as glass smashed around her and black ropes came falling to the ground. She jumped up and kept her head down as agents in black body armor slid down the ropes. Evelyn and her minions fired shots and ran towards the exit. Hannah reached to click on her earpiece.

“Target on the move!” She yelled, as the agents reached the ground and chased after Evelyn and her company. A woman appeared next to Hannah and took off her helmet. Pulling out a gun she handed it to Hannah with a smile. It was Stephanie.

“All according to plan?” She asked, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a packet of gum. Hannah rolled her eyes and ran towards the back exit to the building. Stephanie followed behind, gun raised. Hannah paused and looked out the small window, the smudges blocking a clear view. She squinted and saw a red and two black figures skulk past.

Smiling, Hannah nodded back to Stephanie and put up her fingers, counting them down from three. She pushed open the door and moved out into the small hallway. Evelyn’s red dress disappeared around the corner and Hannah glanced back at Stephanie, pointing in that direction. She moved as quickly and quietly as she could, throwing her back against the wall.

Hannah peered around the corner and saw two of the men from earlier fiddling with a key to the office door. Hannah pulled back and turned to Stephanie.

“Evelyn and two idiots fumbling with a key to the office.” Hannah relayed.

Stephanie whispered the information into her comms and Hannah took a breath, looking back around the corner. Evelyn spotted her and smiled, lifting a gun and firing. Pulling back, Hannah heard Stephanie shift behind her.

“Shots fired!” Stephanie yelled. Hannah moved around the corner, firing her weapon. Bullets were fired back from the men while Evelyn worked on the key to the door. Hannah moved across to the wall on the other side of the hallway and took a breath. Looking down she checked; they had missed.

Stephanie remained on the other wall and they glance at each other, nodding. Guns raised they turned the corner and advanced, firing their weapons. They paused and lowered their guns.

They had disappeared.

Hannah and Stephanie shared a glance then ran towards the office. With the door wide open, they positioned themselves on either side and Stephanie peered inside. A shot was fired and she pulled back, breathing heavily.

“Give up Evelyn! You are outnumbered and outgunned!” Hannah breathed in deeply between sentences. She leaned forward, trying to look inside the room through the reflection of the window in the adjoining door.

“There is no way out of that room.” Hannah said, her voice calm. A laugh echoed from inside.

“I’ll never tell you where Zeke is!” Evelyn yelled. Hannah looked over to where Stephanie was shaking her head.

Hannah ignored her and breathed in deeply. She turned the corner, gun raised. Clearing the room from left to right, Hannah dropped her gun and sighed.

They were gone.

Hannah Carmichael Chronicles | TWO

TWO

“Hello Dear.” The greeting sounded sincere but Hannah knew better.
“Where is he?” Hannah’s voice squeaked out as a whisper. She felt a tremor in her hand and she tried to keep the gun steady.
“Who darling?” Her mother asked, her smile unwavering. Hannah scoffed,
“You know who!” The strength in her voice returned as the anger bubbled to the surface.
Evelyn Carmichael took a step closer, her eyes on the gun. Hannah looked behind her mother to the open doorway. Two large men stood at her only escape and Hannah took a small step backwards. The smile on Evelyn’s face widened and she took another step closer.
“Stop playing games!” Hannah said, firming her stance. Evelyn stopped, her smile dropping. She motioned for the two men to advance and they slowly took steps forward, hands on their own weapons.
“You’re not going to shoot me dear.” Evelyn said, her smile returning.
“Where is he?!” Hannah’s voice cracked and she fought to keep her hands steady. Evelyn clicked her tongue and shook her head.
“What kind of mother would I be if I knew where Zeke was and I didn’t tell you?” Hannah stepped closer to her mother. The two men stopped moving forward and pulled their weapons from their holsters. Hannah moved the gun from one of them to the other then back to Evelyn.
“Hannah, you are outnumbered and outgunned. Put it down.” Her mother’s voice was calm but harsh. Hannah heard voices outside the small room and knew more were coming. With new light illuminating the room, Hannah searched for a window. Evelyn followed her frantic gaze and chuckled.
“Oh darling. You can’t escape without going through that door.” She pointed behind her and Hannah scoffed.
“I could shoot my way out.” She said, taking a small step closer to her mother.
“Perhaps, but then how would you find Zeke?”
Hannah sighed and lowered her gun. Her mother’s companions grabbed the gun from her and pulled her out of the room. Her eyes readjusted again with the new light and she blinked.
Mannequins were scattered in the abandoned dressmaking warehouse, giving the large room an eerie feel. Hannah was thrown into a chair as her mother moved to a table with a silver tea set. She poured from the teapot and the steam fogged the silver.
Hannah scanned the room for the exits and windows, the nearest being guarded by a muscular woman. Evelyn turned and sipped from the cup, raising her eyebrows.
“Oh! I’m sorry, did you want some tea?” She asked, sipping again.
“Where is Zeke?” Hannah asked, watching her mother carefully. Evelyn smiled,
“What makes you think I know where Zeke is?” She asked, sitting across from Hannah.
Hannah sighed and looked at the ground.
“It’s been ten days.” She said, looking back up with tears forming in her eyes.
“Yes.” Her mother said, sipping her tea. Hannah tried to stand and felt a hand on her shoulder, pushing her down.
“Where is he?!” Hannah yelled, the echo caused heads to turn and hands to position above weapons. Evelyn cleared her throat and stood, walking back over to the teapot. She started humming as she poured more water into her cup and Hannah growled quietly.
“Frustrated?” Evelyn asked, facing away from her.
“He’s innocent. He doesn’t deserve-“
“He’s no more innocent than you are!” Evelyn interrupted and slammed her cup onto the table. Spinning around, Evelyn’s casual smile had been replaced by a scowl. Hannah shifted in her seat and stared straight ahead at nothing. Evelyn sighed and returned to her seat.
“Hannah?” She waited until Hannah turned to look at her. The smile had returned and she reached forward, putting her hand on Hannah’s leg.
“I can help you, but you have to tell me what I want to know first.”
“So you do know where Zeke is?” Hannah asked, leaning forward. Evelyn smiled,
“Let’s say I do.” Evelyn leaned back and crossed her arms.
“You know what I want in return for his location.” Evelyn’s smile disappeared and Hannah glanced back over to the nearest exit. Her mother uncrossed her arms and leaned in closer.
“Where is it?” She hissed. A small red spot appeared on Evelyn’s forehead and Hannah smiled.
“What?” Her mother asked, standing. The red spot followed her. Hannah let her smile fall away and stared at her mother with no emotion.
“Game over.”

Hannah Carmichael Chronicles | ONE

ONE

Hannah Carmichael reached into her bag and fumbled around until she felt the cold steel. Sudden movement to her left triggered a heart flutter and she pulled out the gun. She aimed it in the direction of uncertainty and held her breath.

The small sliver of light from the door edge wasn’t enough to determine what was in the small room. Cautiously she took a step closer to the door and paused to listen. The voices on the other side of the door were muffled and she took another step closer.

The sweat on her hands was loosening her grip on the gun. She wiped her hands on her jeans, trying to keep the gun steady. The next person to enter this room was going to get a bullet.

Slowly she reached into the bag again and felt around for her pocket knife. If she could find it, she figured she could use it to pry open the door. A smile crept onto her face as she wrapped her fingers around the knife. Slinging the bag over her shoulder, Hannah lowered the gun to her side.

She pressed herself up against the door and felt for the doorknob. Her brows raised when she failed to find it and she sighed. Slowly she lowered herself down to the ground and felt for a bolt. She counted;

One, Two, Three

Three bolts on the bottom of the door alone. The voices behind the door began getting clearer and footsteps louder. Hannah pushed away from the door and raised herself up, lifting the gun. The sound of her pocket knife dropping onto the concrete was deafening as she stood; waiting.

Hannah glanced in the direction of the clatter, only the darkness greeting her. The sounds of the deadbolts being released echoed in the small room and she counted.

One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six

She gripped the gun tighter and sucked in a quick breath.

Hannah squinted as her eyes adjusted to a sudden burst of light and she tried to keep the gun steady.

“Oh please, put that away.” The voice was cool and collected and Hannah moved backwards. She blinked, trying to see past the red blob walking towards her and cocked her gun. The blob paused and raised its hands.

As her eyes adjusted, Hannah saw a smiling woman come into focus.

“Mother?”

Proof Of Life (Furious Fiction)

FURIOUS FICTION

Another month, another 500 word story. This month, it started with a question, included the words ‘Jam, Jungle and Jackpot’ and ended with the word BANG – Enjoy!

PROOF OF LIFE

“How long has it been?”
Caleb stopped rocking back and forth and looked up at Rebecca, “Who cares? We’re going to die here no matter what.”
She glanced at the bolted door then back to Caleb. He had resumed rocking and humming softly to himself. Just like when they were kids. Rebecca stayed perfectly still for a moment, listening for movement outside the door. She took a deep breath and pushed herself up. Caleb looked up, his breathing getting heavier, “What are you doing?” he hissed, as she waddled towards the door.

She paused and looked over to him, “They leave the same time every day.” Inches away from the door, she heard the knob turn. The door seemed to open in slow motion, as she stood frozen in the doorway.
“Well, well, well,” The woman pushed her back down onto the cold, hard floor. “Looks like we’ve got an attempted escape,” She snickered back at her partner then faced Rebecca again. “You can take your chances out there in the Jungle if you like,”
Rebecca saw Caleb shrink into the wall as the woman pulled a gun from behind her back.

“You try anything like that again, and I’ll jam this gun into your side and pull the trigger.”
“What do you want from us?” Rebecca asked as the man closed the door behind him, pulling out a camera. He aimed it at Caleb and took a picture as the woman held the gun steady at Rebecca.
“We hit the jackpot when we found you two. Do you know how much your Father will pay to get you back?” Rebecca frowned as the man moved over to her. The flash blinding her momentarily and the man looked at the pictures and smiled.
“Got em. Proof of life.” He said, putting the camera back into his pocket.

The woman reached into a bag on her hip and pulled out a bottle of water. She threw it in Rebecca’s direction and turned, talking quietly to the man. The water inside the bottle started shaking slightly and Rebecca looked over to Caleb. He flinched as the shaking started getting stronger. Their captors didn’t seem to notice and Rebecca pushed herself towards the wall. Sounds began to disappear as Rebecca kept her eyes glued to the door.
BANG.

The door swung open as police entered the small room, guns poised at Rebecca and Caleb’s captors. The woman lifted her gun towards Caleb and the man tried to run for the window. An officer tackled him to the ground and the woman pulled Caleb up, pointing the gun at his head.

Her face was scrunched as she yelled at the officers in front of her. One of them grabbed Rebecca’s arm and pulled her up. She fought to reach for her brother as the woman made the fatal mistake of aiming the gun at the officers. The silence was shattered as the officer next to Rebecca fired.
BANG.
