Clowns: Funny or Scary | Classic Debates

Clowns have entertained and intrigued people for generations. With their colourful costumes, exaggerated makeup, and silly antics, they are meant to bring smiles to faces. However, for some, clowns evoke an entirely different emotion – fear. The perennial debate continues: are clowns funny or scary?

The Funny Side of Clowns

Clowns are masters of physical comedy, eliciting laughter through their exaggerated movements and hilarious pranks. They bring joy to children of all ages at birthday parties, circuses, and comedy shows. Their ability to create a lighthearted and carefree atmosphere is second to none.

The Darker Side

While some find clowns endearing, others have a deep phobia known as “coulrophobia.” These individuals experience an overwhelming sense of fear and discomfort in the presence of clowns. This fear may have been fuelled by horror movies, urban legends, or even childhood memories. The unsettling combination of exaggerated features, hidden identities, and unpredictable behaviour can be a recipe for nightmares.

Finding a Middle Ground

The perception of clowns largely varies from person to person. It is crucial to respect individual perspectives on the matter. In recent years, we have witnessed a shift towards embracing all types of clowning, from the traditional funny clown to the artistic and avant-garde. Accepting the differences and appreciating the artistic expressions within the clown community helps bridge the gap between funny and scary.

In the end, whether clowns are funny or scary is going to be subjective. They have undoubtedly brought joy to countless people, while also evoking fear in some. The world of clowns is a fascinating one, blending laughter, creativity, and yes, even a touch of mystery. Whether these mysterious and unusual creative expressions may bring out different reactions in some of us, I think perhaps the best way to look at it is this….

Clowns are people under the makeup and silly movements. Whether you find them funny or scary, there’s a person under all that who’s goal is to make you feel (whichever option above it is for you). So, let’s remember the person underneath and perhaps we can look past the scary or appreciate the funny and enjoy the ride.

Flying Tin Can?

“Excuse me stewardess, is this plane safe?”
“Of course, we’ve just hit some turbulence.”
“Is that because there’s a problem with the right phalange?”

I’ve been in plenty of aeroplanes (and one of which I co-piloted.. sort of.. in a test flight to fly it). When you’re a kid, you don’t think too much about the plane possibly falling out of the sky and ending up in a fiery death on the ground (or a watery grave). Yes, you watched the security briefing ‘in case of an emergency’ etcetera; but it isn’t something you consider as a REAL option.

As an adult, we can tend to be a bit more skeptical. We notice things that kids don’t (like odd sounds in the engine, or a slight drop in the flight attendant’s demeanour). Sometimes, despite the statistics that it’s safer than driving, we are scared to get into a plane and travel even the span of an hour!

The idea that a plane could so easily catch fire is disconcerting (even to myself – who isn’t afraid of flying at all). When Hannah Carmichael (super spy) and her team faced a plane on fire – in fact an explosion that knocked them on their butts – it would have been a day at the office for them. For us, it would be once in a lifetime to see.

Planes – they tell you – are safe. But are you still afraid of flying?

Everything Is Going To Be Fine

FURIOUS FICTION

This Furious Fiction was beginning with the phrase ‘A Long Time Ago’, including the words ‘Star, War and Force’ and feature something that flies – Enjoy!

EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE FINE 

“A long time ago,”

Actually it was yesterday, Eloise thought as Amanda continued.

“Two girls made the journey to a foreign land.”

“Amanda, please shut up,” Eloise said as she looked at Amanda, who raised an eyebrow.

“Can I finish my story please?”

Eloise rolled her eyes as the plane bumped slightly. Eloise felt her heart beating faster. She wrung her hands on her T-shirt. After today, her favourite shirt definitely had permanent wrinkles.

Amanda was still spinning a tale about the two girls who wanted to go to Hollywood and become stars.

“Amanda,” Eloise looked over at Amanda and tried to smile. “I appreciate you trying to distract me, but I’m fine.”

Amanda faced her and narrowed her eyes, “You don’t have to pretend your insides aren’t at war with me.” She smiled and turned to face the seat in front of her, clearing her throat. “When our two heroes decided to embark on this journey, they thought it was impossible!”

Eloise took a deep breath and looked across the aisle. A mother was trying to wrangle her screaming child into his seatbelt. Another, more violent bump, made Eloise grab onto Amanda’s hand. Amanda stopped talking and the tone for the seat belt sign rang through Eloise’s ears. She reached to check for her seatbelt; it was still securely fastened. The captain’s voice came across the intercom, “Ladies and gentlemen this is your captain speaking. We appear to be entering a bit of turbulence. As you may have noticed, we have put the seat belt sign on so please ensure you have your seat belt securely fastened.” Eloise took a deep breath and swallowed hard. The plane jerked forward violently and other passengers around them started to gasp and mumble.

Amanda had stopped talking and Eloise looked over to her. Her face had gone pale and she was breathing through pursed lips. Eloise quickly snapped her head back to face the chair in front of her.

The flight attendants had all disappeared, preparing to strap themselves in for the turbulence. Eloise felt her breathing get faster and she tried to breathe in and out. In and out.

A Ker Clunk noise on the left side of the plane had everyone in the cabin looking around, chattering. The sound of panic was deafening. The intercom buzzed to life.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we will be making an unscheduled landing at the Honolulu Airport. The Flight Attendants will give you instructions. Everything is going to be fine.” The Flight Attendants appeared and a woman gave a tight smile as she relayed bracing instructions over the intercom.

The lights suddenly flickered and Eloise felt the full force of a tailwind rattle the aircraft. The woman tried to calm the passengers as children began to cry. Eloise looked over to Amanda. A tear fell down her cheek and she smiled, grasping her hand tighter. Air masks fell from compartments above them and instructions came over the intercom. Eloise reached for hers as the plane began to fall.
