Reading a “Scandal Sheet” To Get Smarter | Day 5

Five days is a work week… so that counts as a week, right? Well at any rate, this is the FINAL day of my reading a physical newspaper every day to see if it makes me smarter, or that it ads value to my life. Here’s the final thoughts and results!

So it was day three of reading the same Australian newspaper sheet, and I managed to sort of finish it off. This time there were a lot of skipped or skimmed articles, but not because they weren’t altogether interesting. Yes, some of them weren’t of any interest… particularly on a Saturday.

I did love to see a Book Review, that was fun. Plus the articles themselves were varied from world events that were well covered and balanced, to celebrity pieces that were actually interesting without being “sensationalised” to the point of being sick.

If I had to choose a paper to read each day, it would absolutely be The Australian. But will I be racing to read a newspaper every day? No. Even online? No. I think being informed is a good thing, but that much information all at one time each day, is not for me. I would rather only know things that of importance to my immediate life.

Then, I suppose that is why a lot of people DON’T opt for a paper or to look at news each day. Depressing topics, ideology you don’t want thrown in your face, or just plain information overload… I could see these easily being the reason.

Well, after the “week” is up, how do I sit? From Uneducated Slob, to Pretentious Snob… I think I’m feeling a little pretentious, because of my superior need not to read a paper (hold your hate comments, I’m joking). But I’m also feeling a little like a slob, because I’m not staying up to date with the world. I suppose you could say that I’m a Pretentious Slob

If you still read newspapers, let me know which ones in the comments? Why do you actually like them? I’d love to know! Otherwise…

Reading “Fish Wrap” To Get Smarter | Day 4

Alrighty, so it’s officially Day 4 of reading a physical newspaper (did you know they used to call them “fish wraps” so… yeah).

We are back again reading The Australian newspaper. If you didn’t catch yesterday’s post, I have spaced out just the one paper for the last few days of this test. I noticed pretty early on that it takes time and effort to read through the entirety of a newspaper – particularly when you are interested in almost all the articles. So I have split it up.

Today, I really appreciated reading an article pushing back on journalistic standards. Another journalist pointed out a particular writer who seemingly tends to leave out information on a story that doesn’t fit her narrative, rather than just share all the information. On the whole, I think journalists have forgotten that newspaper articles are NOT opinion, they are information providers. You want to write an opinion piece, start a blog. It’s not the same.

I was impressed again by the level of professionalism and quality – and made it to the “world” section, which appears to have pulled articles (or at the very least, ideas) from other papers around the world that the article relates to.

So, where do I sit on the Slob to Snob scale today? I feel like I am going steady at an ‘Enlightened and Surprised Human‘ – a marked improvement!

I’m still going, and there are a few more days left of this series, so check back tomorrow to see if my opinion goes downhill, I start feeling dumber, or maybe it just gets better?

Reading a “Blab Sheet” To Get Smarter | Day 3

Okay, things are changing up a little!

After braving the rain to get the next newspaper (and without a bag mind you, I was fortunate enough to hide it under my top so it didn’t get soaked though) I have reached a conclusion… but more on that later.

This time, my newspaper of choice was The Australian. A different paper, for a different day. I wasn’t sure about this one, because most of my life I really have only heard about The Age and Herald Sun, but let me tell you… I was missing out!

I instantly recognised that this one was different than those others.

  • The news articles felt a lot more like ACTUAL news, rather than random bits of information
  • The articles themselves actually go into depth, and feel well covered
  • They are actually interesting pieces. News that you feel like you want to hear about, and know things that are important

So, let me get back to why today is different… Because this newspaper was actually interesting, I need to break it up. I’m getting weary of reading that much news every day, so to combat this, I’m using the rest of my week to keep reading the same paper from The Australian.

So, here we go with more articles every day. More information and more chances to feel smart. I made it through four pages of the paper, so here’s to the next lot tomorrow!

As for Slob or Snob, I am feeling decidedly Smart today and look forward to tomorrow bringing some more of THAT!

Reading a “Rag” To Get Smarter?? | Day 2

Okay, it is DAY 2 of reading a physical newspaper to see if it can make me smarter and a little more educated.

After the challenge yesterday of finding a place where you can find an array of paper choices, I settled to run up to Wooly’s and grabbed a different one than yesterday. Today’s choice, was The Herald Sun!

So, what are my thoughts overall, and in comparison to the one I read yesterday? Let me tell you – good and bad (again, lacking in consistency), here we go!

Good

  • There are helpful things (that were also in yesterday’s paper choice too) that if you don’t like using your phone or computer would be great! Like the weather and tv guide
  • A fun daily short story surprised me towards the back of the paper

Bad

  • The layout was just plain confusing! Things were all over the place, and made no sense to be on the same page, let alone next to each other. The best example I came across was an article on Tiktok birth control advice right beside one about the Australian Army…
  • There were short, meaningless stories that weren’t fleshed out but had POTENTIAL to go into interesting stories and places.. instead they read like a Twitter post of random and short information
  • The paper was TWICE as long as the other I had read
  • There were WAY more death and funeral notices in this one, which isn’t bad per se, but it is super depressing to see that many
  • Again, it was clear which side of the political isle that some of these articles were taking

I will admit, that this time I did NOT read every single article in full. I couldn’t bare it after yesterday when I discovered that newspapers were essentially boring…. yeah. They are.

So, from Uncultured Slob to Pretentious Snob, where do I find myself today?

I think I’m sitting at Frustrated Human

I WILL be subjecting myself to more of this tomorrow, where I will read Another newspaper to see if it gets any better. Meanwhile
