In recent years, the delicate balance between political correctness and free speech has become a subject of intense debate. While political correctness aims to foster inclusivity and promote respect, critics argue that it has the unintended consequence of limiting free expression. Let’s delves into the complexities surrounding the impact of political correctness on free speech.

The Threat to Free Speech
Advocates for free speech argue that political correctness has created a climate of fear and self-censorship. They contend that certain ideas or viewpoints, no matter how unpopular, should be protected under the banner of free speech. Silencing controversial opinions may lead to a stifling of intellectual diversity and hinder meaningful dialogue. This side of the debate doesn’t advocate for “hate speech” but simply a differing view. Not agreeing with your viewpoint is NOT hateful or disrespectful, unless it is expressed with anger and in a nasty way – which can happen on ANY side of ANY argument. The free speech side of the argument is simply advocating for the ability to express another view than the “mainstream” opinion of the day (which changes all the time anyway).

The Dangers of Overreach
It is crucial to distinguish between political correctness’s noble objective of safeguarding marginalized voices from targeted hate speech, and the potential overreach that threatens open discourse. When political correctness becomes rigid and suppresses dissenting voices, it risks undermining the very freedom it seeks to protect. Having a mess of angry and irrational arguments will never lead to any productive discussion, or meaningful expression of ideas. Instead, people will never share their opinion, and no change will ever be made because we are not exploring another mindset and potential set of ideas.

Finding the Middle Ground
Rather than viewing political correctness and free speech as adversaries, we should strive for a nuanced understanding. A healthy balance can be achieved by fostering a culture that values respectful dialogue while also allowing space for dissent and constructive criticism. Encouraging empathy and understanding, rather than silencing differing opinions, can lead to a more inclusive and vibrant society. Difference is part of life, and it’s what makes it interesting. By removing all different views, cultures or opinions, we would be depriving ourselves of an amazing and diverse world. Just because someone doesn’t agree with you, doesn’t mean they are automatically a bigot.

The paradox of political correctness and free speech presents society with challenging questions. While political correctness plays a crucial role in protecting vulnerable communities, it must not be allowed to erode the fundamental principles of free expression. By upholding both freedom of speech and respectful discourse, we can envision a society that embraces diversity of thought without compromising empathy and equality.

Wokeness
In recent years, the concept of “wokeness” has gained significant traction, with its proponents advocating for social justice and raising awareness about various marginalizations. However, as noble as this movement may seem on the surface, in some cases, is going too far and potentially causing more harm than good.

The Slippery Slope of Cancel Culture
One of the immediate repercussions of the wokeness movement is the rise of cancel culture. While holding individuals accountable for their actions is essential, cancel culture often leads to a toxic environment where even minor transgressions can result in severe consequences. This stifles healthy dialogue and discourages personal growth, ultimately undermining our ability to learn and understand one another.

The Danger of Oversimplification (No More Nuance)
Wokeness encourages a binary way of thinking that categorizes everything into oppressor or oppressed. This oversimplification can hinder progress by minimizing complex issues and disregarding individual experiences that may not fit neatly into predetermined narratives. It risks creating divisions instead of fostering genuine inclusivity.

Echo Chambers and the Death of Critical Thinking
The wokeness movement has unintentionally fostered echo chambers where people surround themselves with like-minded individuals, reinforcing their beliefs and shutting out dissenting opinions. This lack of exposure to alternative viewpoints hampers critical thinking, hindering intellectual growth and impeding societal progress.

While wokeness initially emerged to bring important issues to light, we must be cautious of its potential negative impact on society. By encouraging constructive conversations and understanding diverse perspectives, while also not removing the opportunity for people to have a different opinion without screaming “hate”, we can navigate the complexities of our world while maintaining a balance between social progress and individual liberties.

We’re clamouring more and more for stories that include EVERYONE… When is too far though?
Time for a CONTROVERSIAL OPINION!

Everyone wants to feel heard, recognised, and represented – especially in this time of being isolated or in restrictions and lockdowns. But when does it go from a request, to a demand?

I’ve heard time and time again of authors that are slammed because they don’t represent this group, or that.. They didn’t include various types or groups of people in the story – and shame on them! But is it really?

I find this a funny request/demand.
Stories, are by their very essence, a group of characters and a plot that comes from the imagination of a person.
People are all different. We have different socio-economic backgrounds, different people who we surround ourselves with, different beliefs and values. So why should every story, contain everything?

I think this desire to be seen, heard, and acknowledged comes from a deep place of hurt and neglect. Some groups/people feel ignored and pushed aside. I understand this hurt, but I also understand that these wounds will never be healed by seeing yourself reflected in a story.

Just because an author or story teller has a platform, it doesn’t mean they owe your wounds and scars anything. They have their own. A story teller writes from their understanding and experiences. They write from the ideas that ONLY THEY can contribute to the world. And guess what… it’s okay if this doesn’t include a carbon copy image of you in it.

I hear arguments of ‘if they don’t know about it, they should educate themselves’ or ‘they have a responsibility to their platform/audience to educate them also’ but the reality is, I don’t agree with those at all. I think if you’re going to write a story about something specific, then YES you should absolutely learn and educate yourself before you put words to paper. But the only responsibility that a story teller/author has for their story and their words, is to themselves. They need to be authentic/true to who they are, not to who you are – or who you want them to be.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I would LOVE to see more representations of things that matter to me (for example, more ACCURATE depictions of Christian people – we can get a pretty unfair shake in media!!), but I don’t go so far as to say that it’s the RESPONSIBILITY of an author who isn’t a Christian, or who doesn’t care about my beliefs, to put a character that’s accurately represented into their stories. It’s just not logical or practical.

Instead of demanding story tellers to include people who you identify with, maybe shift your perspective. Find those authors who are ALREADY doing just that – writing about you, or what you care about. Because they exist! I promise you they do. I found a multitude of authors who write beautiful Christian characters and perspectives. There are story tellers out there for you too!

Not every author, has a responsibility to write every character under the sun. If you’re struggling to feel heard or seen in media, change the game! Pick up your pen, or promote authors who are already doing that…

Let’s allow stories to be told the way the authors have crafted them.

Let’s allow more grace to our fellow humans.

Let’s find our worth, value, and identity within ourselves, and not in the media we are bombarded with.
