FIFTY-ONE

Zeke lay motionless on the ground, and Hannah felt herself frozen in place. Baxter turned to her, a twisted smile on his face. As he fired a shot at her, Hannah didn’t move, her eyes shifting to Zeke. A shadow covered her view as Stephanie lunged in front of Hannah.
Stephanie’s body jerked backwards and she groaned, holding her left shoulder as she stumbled backwards. Hannah reached out, but Stephanie was too far in front of her to catch. As Stephanie knelt on the ground, clutching her arm, Hannah navigated past her and charged forward at Baxter. His eyes widened at her sudden advance and they struggled for the gun.
More shots sprang into the air as Baxter tried to regain control. Hannah saw an opening and kicked his leg out. He stumbled and she took the gun as he slipped to the ground. She held it between his eyes and breathed heavily, glancing over to where Zeke was still lying still on the ground.
“Just shoot me,” Baxter said below her. She looked down and frowned.
“CGT will never let you live. They’ll just keep sending people like me until the threat is neutralised,” Baxter started laughing. Stephanie shuffled behind her and Hannah flipped Baxter’s gun around, whipped it into the side of Baxter’s head. He collapsed, now silent and Stephanie walked towards her, still holding her injured shoulder.
Hannah snapped her head around to Zeke and propelled herself forward. Falling to the ground at his side, Hannah looked for the wound. She didn’t see any blood and felt a burst of hope fill her heart. Pulling back his shirt she revealed a bullet proof vest and exhaled, leaning down and listening for breathing. When she pulled away, she put her hand on his neck and smiled as she felt a pulse.
Hannah glanced at the unconscious Baxter, lying on the ground. As Stephanie slowly made her way towards Hannah, sirens grew louder. The police were on the way, and they had to get out of here. She tried to pull Zeke to his feet, but his limp and heavy body slumped over and wouldn’t comply.
The sirens were getting closer and Hannah heard Stephanie shouting behind her. She turned and her eyes widened as a van drove over into the parking lot, speeding on top of the curb. It drove quickly to Stephanie and veered in front of her, blocking Hannah’s view. She turned back to Zeke, trying to drag him away from the van.
As it pulled away from its spot and closer to Hannah, she glanced around for Stephanie, but the van had swallowed her. Hannah reached behind her back for her gun, one hand still on Zeke’s collar, her heart stopping as the van door slid open.
The face that stared at her was like a distant memory,
“Get in the van!” he yelled. Hannah frowned and looked down at Zeke once more, then back up to the man she used to call her Father.
