My Name Is Jane
Elizabeth wiped the frost from the glass on the table and stood back. She was ready. Once her guests were seated she raised her glass and tapped against it.
“I believe a toast is necessary,” Elizabeth motioned to the bride and groom and raised her glass higher. “Sally and Evan. I’d like to say that I know you will have an amazing life together.” Nods were given around the table and Elizabeth lowered her glass.
“I’d like to, but I can’t,” Her guests glanced at each other, murmuring. Elizabeth felt her heart beating faster and continued.
“I met Sally and Evan five years ago at a Jazz festival,” She paused and looked around the room at the expectant faces, letting her hand fall to her side. “Unfortunately I had a secret.”
More murmurs filled the small room and the guests began to lower their glasses. Elizabeth turned to Sally and Evan. “When we first met, it was no coincidence,” She took a deep breath and reached into her pocket. The glint of the light catching the barrel of the gun was always her favourite part. Gasps filled the room and people instinctively put up their hands in surrender. Elizabeth pointed the gun towards Sally and Evan rose, standing between her and the gun.
“What is this Liz? Who are you?” Evan asked and Elizabeth smiled.
“I was hired to kill you Evan,” She said and his brows rose, rage filling his eyes as his face turned red.
“By who?”
She laughed as she held the gun steady, “I’m sorry it had to be like this. Especially after five years but unfortunately the client who hired me had a change of heart.”
“So why now?” Evan moved his arms behind his back, wrapping them around Sally.
“They paid me handsomely to,” she paused and shrugged. “Keep an eye on you. It’s just bad luck that they decided to go ahead right before your wedding.”
Evan squared his shoulders and jutted out his chin, firming his stance. Elizabeth saw another guest across from her reach into his pocket and pull out a phone. She moved the gun in his direction and he froze.
“Tsk, tsk. Now we don’t want that, do we?”
He shook his head and she smiled. Turning back to Evan, she was just in time to see him lunge towards her. They fought over the gun and guests began to scream as they ran for cover. Evan’s uncle moved behind her just as she gripped the trigger. A loud sound filled the room followed by a deadly silence. Elizabeth slumped to the floor and dropped the gun. She felt the hole in her chest and pulled her hand to her face. A red substance she had seen many times before covered her hand and she fell onto her back.
Evan reached forward and tried to stop the bleeding.
“Who hired you? Who are you?” Sally asked, her voice wobbling.
Elizabeth looked at her and smiled, “My name is Jane.”
