Video Game-Inspired Books: Why They Struggle to Match the Games

Video games are filled with unbelievable, unparalleled, and sometimes impossible things… which might be why they make such great backgrounds for stories. I read some books that have video games as either a big element, part of the plot, or heavy on the references!

Warcross (Marie Lu)

I LOVED this book.
It was nice to have a fantasy/dystopian that wasn’t all magic and superpowers, but technology based (that had subtle links to the Legend trilogy – supposedly set way in the future from Warcross).
The characters were great, plot very interesting and unpredictable (for me) and I love Marie’s writing style.

Ready Player One (Ernest Cline)

I really enjoyed the story as a whole, but I did feel like some of it dragged on a bit. The pop culture references were fun, the gaming ones would be great if I knew more in depth (though I did understand them at a surface level), and I thought it was interesting as we navigated through the game.

Two Can Play That Game (Leanne Yong)

Cute, fun, nerdy, everything you wanted. There was minimal romance, and most of it was about the games. If you love games, you’ll love this. I had a lot of fun seeing the Australian Malaysian world, and the character development was good too. I felt it was very slow paced, which made it a bit difficult for me to get through, but having said that, I also really enjoyed it. I found myself laughing out loud a lot, and I really liked Most of the book.

Dungeon Crawler Carl (Matt Dinniman)

Ridiculous, horrendous, hilarious. The idea is so preposterously amazing that I absolutely loved it. Even amongst the dark, very intense moments and ideas, the humour made it enjoyable. Something that would otherwise be horrible, somehow is now incredible. I now officially want a cat to win and rule the world… yup.
