If you told me that I would have written and released an entire novella in just 14 days, I would have laughed at you then paused, and considered that it might be possible. Only a crazy person would attempt it, however. Then again, I’ve always been a little crazy. After actually making it and releasing the book on Amazon (get Hart Hats & Mixed Signals >>>here), not only did I realise that the small town of Hartwell Grove had more stories to tell, but that this time, I’d do things differently.

Why I’m Choosing A Slower Pace

There were pros that came from writing a book in 7-14 days, but there were cons also. One of those cons includes quality. While I extended the deadline to 14 days to reach a better novella overall, there were still things that I would have done differently or expanded to make the book a full length one. I think there were some other places I could have taken it, and reader feedback I could have gotten if I wasn’t constrained with the short deadline. In doing things a little slower and giving myself more time, I am hoping to be able to get a better outcome, longer book and reader experience that loves to see the characters of Hartwell Grove come alive.

What I Want To Improve

Obviously, I want the book to be better and longer than the first in the series. I really want to explore the town, give more depth to the character POV’s and generally put out something amazing. That means, I need time. Time to make sure things are the best they can be. I don’t think a year is necessary, like it is with my fantasy books, but certainly more than a week this time.

Planning Differently

Book 1 taught me to plan a little differently, and even though I’ve already got book 2 and 3 outlined and ready to start, making sure each section of the process gets its own designated and appropriate time is crucial. I want the town and characters in Hartwell Grove to come alive. I want the stories to entertain and tug at heart strings. I need the story and characters to breathe.

Early Brainstorming

So, without spoilers, what is the next book going to look like?

Characters: These are going to be people you’ve already seen in book 1, but this is a stand alone series, so if you haven’t read the first one, it won’t be a big deal. You’ll get a little context from having read it, and things will be referenced, but you’ll still be fine to go. I LOVE these two characters, and seeing them get a story is very exciting!

Story: The stakes in book 1 were pretty high for the suspense, but this time, the emotional stakes are going to take centre stage. The push and pull is more pronounced, and the strong willed characters will butt heads for sure! There’s still a mystery to solve, and personal dynamics to navigate because this time, it’s enemies to lovers!

It was never my intention to write a romance series. In fact, I didn’t ever think I would be doing something even close. When these stories came into my mind and characters into my heart, however, I couldn’t help but write them. While Bex and Nick had a hectic climb in 14 days, who comes next is going to get a slower and more detailed experience.
