FIFTY-THREE
Hannah watched Zeke’s chest rise and fall. It had been almost 12 hours since they had arrived at her Father’s base of operations. Around here they had nicknamed it The Palace, but the abandoned factory was anything but. Zeke stirred and Hannah leaned forward, her hand on his arm.
Slowly Zeke opened his eyes and looked around, lunging forward in an attempt to sit up.
“Zeke, it’s okay,” Hannah said, gently pushing his arm down. He focused on her and his eyes softened.
“Where are we?” He asked, glancing around their small infirmary.
“Somewhere safe. I guess it was my turn to sit here and watch you wake from the dead,” Hannah said, trying to keep her tone light. Zeke gave a small smile and winced, reaching for his chest.
“You were shot, but you had your vest on. You’ve got some bruises and cracked ribs, but you’ll be okay.” Hannah stood up and got Zeke a glass of water, handing it to him and watching as he drank the entire glass.
“That’s embarrassing; not everyone passes out this long after being shot with a vest on.” Zeke said as he put the glass on the table next to him. His eyes went dark, “It was Baxter wasn’t it? That wasn’t a dream?” Zeke asked.
Hannah sighed and nodded, motioning around the room, “At least we get to stay in a five star hideaway,” She said, smiling.
Zeke frowned and sat up slowly, “Where is this five star hideaway? How did we get away from Baxter?”
Hannah sat and took a deep breath, “My Dad came and took us all here.”
Zeke frowned and shook his head, “I thought your Dad was dead?”
“So did I,” Hannah said quietly.
Zeke put his hand over hers and smiled softly. “So where has he been all this time?” He asked, looking around the room again.
“Hunting CGT.” Hannah smiled as his eyes widened and she leaned back, crossing her arms. “I know,” She said.
Zeke rubbed his chin and shook his head, “Are all the people in your family spies?” He asked, smiling. Hannah stood up and clapped her hands together,
“That’s what I said!” She chuckled then looked down at the bruises poking through Zeke’s open shirt.
He followed her gaze and frowned, “Where’s Baxter?” He asked, his voice hard.
“They’re holding him in a makeshift interrogation room,” She said. When Zeke started to stand, Hannah held out her hand.
“I have to see him, ask him why he betrayed his country.” Zeke said, his tone almost a whine.
“They’re questioning him now. They’ll get information out of him.” Even Hannah didn’t believe that statement as Zeke rolled his eyes.
“I can get more out of him than they can. We were friends for goodness sake.” Zeke set his jaw and Hannah exhaled, nodding before she led him towards the room where Baxter was being questioned. As they walked through the hallway, a loud siren filled the building and Hannah glanced back at Zeke. They started running towards the main room.
Zeke was breathing heavily behind her and Hannah slowed as they reached the large, open space. Computer monitors lined the far wall and most of her Dad’s people were crowded around one.
“What’s going on?” Hannah asked as she moved closer to the screen.
“Someone entered the perimeter,” James said quietly. Hannah pushed through the crowd to look closer at the screen. When she finally reached the front, she saw the image of the woman standing at their front door. The woman smiled at the screen and Hannah’s heart dropped.
Evelyn Carmichael.
