FORTY-FOUR

Zeke watched the workers rush around the office and smiled. This local newspaper wasn’t exactly The Daily Planet, but he still felt a bit like Clark Kent with his new look, and glasses. He adjusted the glasses on his face and cleared his throat as he turned back to his computer screen.
Baxter had set up the interview at this newspaper last week and Zeke had aced it. Now he had a new gig as a junior writer for The Main Gazette, a believed CGT propaganda paper. This was their way through to CGT without arousing suspicion. The phone on his desk sprung to life and he picked it up, “Charlie Swan.”
“Charlie, this is Baxter,” Baxter’s voice was quiet and Zeke smiled.
“What have you got for me?” Zeke asked, his voice low in the busy office.
“Just got word that Hannah and Steph are being moved to a High Security prison while they wait for their trial,” Baxter said.
Zeke rolled his eyes, “Great. We’re going to have to spring them during the move. It might be our only chance.”
“I agree, we have to organise ourselves today. They’re being moved tomorrow.”
“I’ll ask to cover the move. It’s a big story, the terrorist attack,” Zeke said. They chose a meeting point and he hung up the phone, standing and straightening his jacket. Carefully, Zeke made his way to the door of his newspaper editor and knocked softly.
“Yeah?” The grumpy man in his fifties huffed at him behind the door. Zeke took a breath in then pushed the door open,
“Sir? I’ve just heard from a source that the two terrorist suspects are being moved to a High Security prison tomorrow.” Zeke almost didn’t recognize his own voice as his normally smooth accent was broken into the twang of a different region.
His editor, Mr Black, looked up and frowned, “What? What source?”
Zeke cleared his throat, “The terrorist women are being moved tomorrow, to a High Security prison, and I thought I could cover the move for a piece in the paper.”
“Swan, you’re still a junior writer. What makes you think something as big as this, would be trusted to you?”
Zeke cleared his throat, “Well sir, my source is very reliable and I am a good writer. You read my sample works, I can do this. Plus I have connections which could help us scoop the national newspapers.”
Mr Black thought for a moment then smiled, “Very well Swan. You’ve got the story,” He waved his hand and looked back at his computer. “Now go. Go write it.”
Zeke thanked him and closed the door, a grin plastered on his face. He was going to save his wife.
