The Hannah Carmichael Chronicles
Your Briefing:
Hannah is undercover at the CGT spy agency, who as it turns out, operate only for profit, no matter who they hurt along the way. Her husband Zeke, is her contact with the real government in trying to take down CGT – something she only discovered recently when he mysteriously disappeared. Her mother, Evelyn Carmichael, is a known national terrorist who was planning an attack on a CGT building. When Hannah and her friend, and fellow undercover agent Stephanie, were watching the building, they spotted one of Evelyn’s men before being knocked out. Now awake, they were being held captive by Amanda, a woman who is high up in CGT, and claims to know Hannah’s secret. Which one does she know, if any? Will Hannah and her loved ones be safe?
THIRTY-SIX
Hannah kept her eyes fixed on Amanda and smiled. “The only secret I have is that I hate your outfit.”
Stephanie chuckled from across the room and Hannah watched Amanda’s face remain still and smooth. “My dear Hannah, you don’t need to pretend with me.” She leaned in closer and lowered her voice to a whisper. “I know your husband has told you he’s working for the government.”
Hannah felt her breath catch and she glanced at Stephanie who was straining her neck to hear. Relief that their cover was still intact washed over her and she looked back into Amanda’s eyes.
“Okay. What does that matter? We’re all on the same team,” Hannah paused and tilted her head. “Right?”
Amanda backed up and smiled, turning to face Stephanie. “Oh we’re on the same side, but your husband…” Amanda turned, shaking her head. “I’m afraid he’s been lying to you.”
Hannah stifled a laugh at the irony in that moment and shifted in her restraints.
“Zeke Anderson is actually part of a subset of the government whose only concern is to create chaos and world war for profit.” Amanda crossed her arms,
“Do you have any proof?” Hannah asked,
“Of course.” Amanda pulled back, a scowl on her face. “We can show you, but this would all move a lot smoother if you trust what we’ve found.” She leaned forward and smiled softly. “We have people who came forward with information that Zeke has been working with black market sellers and buyers for everything from drugs, to massive weaponry and even government secrets. I’m sorry dear, but your husband is a very bad man.”
Hannah looked to her right, hoping her face conveyed the false devastation she was going for. Amanda tutted and moved closer.
“I know it’s a shock, but it puts you in a very unique position.”
Stephanie scoffed across the room and Hannah looked at her.
“Why would we do anything for someone who kidnapped us, drugged us and tied us up like criminals?” Stephanie asked. Amanda smiled at Hannah then turned and moved closer to Stephanie.
“What I have to ask you, is something that we were uncertain would get your cooperation.”
“What sort of position am I in?” Hannah asked, fearing she already knew the answer. Amanda kept her back turned away from her and sighed.
“We need you to remove the threat to national security.”
Hannah swallowed hard and Amanda faced her, eyes darkened.
“We need you to kill your husband, Zeke Anderson.”
“If this was a TV show, this would be the moment to fade out to an ad.” Stephanie said, grinning. When Hannah gave her a slight nod, she frowned.
“Why tie us up? If Zeke really is a traitor, what makes you think I wouldn’t want the threat eliminated?” Hannah asked, keeping her tone and her head low.
“Emotional ties are a strong deterrent from assignments like this. If you don’t agree, I’m afraid we need to resort to more unpleasant methods for Zeke’s location.”
As Amanda nodded to a guard at the side of the room, he moved closer to her and they stood in front of Hannah.
“So Agent Carmichael, will you carry out your mission?” She asked, her eyes filled with a chilling sparkle. Hannah forced down her disgust,
“Everyone in my life is turning out to be a traitor. I should’ve taken out Evelyn before the threat level got to this point, but I didn’t.” She paused and sighed, “I’ll do it.”
Stephanie gasped softly and Hannah looked up at her, raising her right shoulder slightly twice. With their signal noted, Stephanie relaxed, then adjusted her expression to match Hannah’s. Amanda clapped her hands together,
“Well that’s settled then.” She nodded to the guard and he pulled out a knife, cutting Hannah’s restraints.
“What about you Agent Winchester? Are you willing to assist?” Amanda asked without turning to face Stephanie. Hannah studied her face as Stephanie agreed, somewhat uncertain. The gleam in Amanda’s eyes returned and Hannah cleared her throat.
“What now?” She asked. Amanda smiled and started walking towards the door.
“Now, you pull the trigger on Zeke Anderson.”
