CATCH THE BLAME (HCC 41)

The Hannah Carmichael Chronicles

Your Briefing:

Hannah is undercover at the CGT spy agency to take them down. She was also chasing her mother Evelyn Carmichael – a known criminal who was planning an attack on the city. When Hannah and her friend, and fellow spy Stephanie followed a lead from CGT, they found most of Evelyn’s followers dead and Evelyn near death herself. As Hannah sat over her mother’s dying body, she and Stephanie were arrested for the terrorism charges instead of Evelyn. What has gone wrong? Was it a misunderstanding? Will Evelyn survive and will Hannah and Stephanie get out alive?

FORTY-ONE

Hannah tapped her foot on the concrete floor of the cell as Stephanie stood on the other side, looking through the bars. The temporary holding cell was cold, but they had been here so long that she was used to the chill.
“I don’t understand,” Stephanie said, still obsessing.
Hannah sighed, “The police think we killed Evelyn’s men then tried to kill her.”
“But why would we do that?” Stephanie asked, hitting her fist on one of the bars. The small sound echoed in the otherwise empty holding cells and Hannah shook her head.
“Someone clearly got to Evelyn before us, and took her out.” She leaned forward on the bars and closed her eyes, “We’re the unlucky ones to catch the blame.”
Footsteps grew louder down the hallway, and Hannah opened her eyes to see several officers with handcuffs.
“You’re lawyer is here to see you,” one of them said, waiting until they were shackled to lead them down the corridor and into an interrogation room. As they got to the room, Hannah suppressed a smile when she saw Anthony sitting across the table, hands interlaced in front of him.
“You have ten minutes until the boss is back. He wants to ask you some more questions,” the Officer said. He closed the door as Hannah and Stephanie sat across from Anthony, hands cuffed.
“Anthony, thank goodness,” Stephanie said quietly. Anthony didn’t smile, staring at them with dead eyes.
“Miss Winchester, Miss Carmichael. It is my regret to inform you that CGT will not be able to assist you in this matter.”
Stephanie rolled her eyes and leaned forward, “Stop playing around Anthony. How are we getting out of this?” she asked.
Hannah inhaled and shook her head, “We aren’t.” She said, staring at Anthony. He smiled slightly and Stephanie turned, frowning at Hannah.
“Yes. Unfortunately you have both been publicly accused of a crime against the city. CGT cannot jeopardise their ongoing missions and secrecy for only two agents.” Anthony stood and collected a briefcase and Stephanie tried to block his path.
“You aren’t going to do anything? What about all we’ve done for you?” she asked, her voice growing louder.
Anthony leaned closer and Hannah held her breath as he whispered. “If you hadn’t have betray us, none of this would be happening,” he said. The door to the room opened and a guard held the door for him. Hannah continued staring at his now empty chair and he cleared his throat behind her. She ignored the cue to turn.
“It really is a shame Hannah,” he said. She took a small breath and waited for him to continue.
“It’s a shame Zeke Anderson had to die for nothing.”
