Book Content Is DREADFUL Today…. | A Christian Perspective on Reading

reading content as a Christian is hard.

explicit content is the norm.

evil and dark content is the norm.

hearing about all the books that people are reading online is difficult, when you look up the trigger warnings and realise it’s not going to be a book for you.

there are a lot of books that are labelled as clean, but are they really? if you look strictly at the idea of no explicit scenes, then yes. a lot of the books labelled as clean, are that. however, recently it was brought to my attention that for some, clean means no swearing also, no disrespectful references to God, and other things that hold books to a high standard. i think having a high standard is amazing, but it means that more and more books become unable to be read if we count those in with the mix.

i can’t rely on what’s being recommended online, so instead i go to the books that are aimed at Christians.

we can’t genuinely expect that the world, who doesn’t know or care about God (sad) is going to release content that will be safe, respectful and within our boundaries. we just can’t.

they don’t care about our standards, so what does that mean for us?

adjusting our expectations to realise, ANY book that comes from the world, has the potential to appall, dishearten or make our blood boil. so maybe we just shouldn’t read any of them. there are a few that surprise you, and are really great! but unfortunately that’s not the norm

there are lots of books that are not worldly, that are aimed at Christians or other groups, so shouldn’t the answer be instead of trying to make worldly books fit into our ideal text, that we choose books we know won’t annoy or offend us?

it’s kind of like a vegetarian picking up a chicken salad sandwich, then being surprised when there’s chicken in the sandwich…

i think so. it’s up to us to choose the books we read, we don’t have to read the ones people out in the world are talking about… then we can spare ourselves from reading the content we don’t like or agree with.

just my thoughts.
